Hawkeye defense

Hawk Talk

The last couple of weeks, I talked about the Iowa offense.
The next couple of weeks, I’ll look at the Iowa defense and special teams.
First, I have to comment about Desmond King, Iowa’s All-World defensive back.
When I say All-World, I mean Desmond was a unanimous consensus All-American, won the Jim Thorpe award, won the Jack Tatum award (voted the best defensive back in America), was the Big Ten’s defensive back of the year and unanimous All-Big Ten selection, yet he’s coming back for his senior year.
Good for you Desmond, who promised his Mom he would graduate.

Des Moines scrimmage

Don Lund
Sports Writer

The Hawks held their annual scrimmage in Des Moines last Friday and the big news was the weather.
It was cold and it was windy.
Iowa didn’t wear full pads, so there was no tackling.
The defense usually is ahead of the offense because they know the plays.
Jay Scheel continued to shine, catching an 80-yard pass during seven-on-seven drills. Jay showed separation on the play, something Iowa needs.

After two overtime periods and 15 Penalty Kicks (PK), Solon improved to 5-0, while the Creek Boys felt the sting of their first loss of the season.

MARENGO– Nearly two weeks without a track meet had Solon’s girls anxious to get to work again. But it was nothing like the months of waiting and wondering faced by Molly Duckett. Surgery in November helped heal a torn labrum in her hip. Months of rehab meant a slow path back to the track.

Solon boys seventh at Hollingsworth Relays in Iowa City

IOWA CITY– Coaches Mark Sovers, Dan Dall, Brad Wymer, Riley Takes, Denny Gruber and the Solon Spartan boys track team stepped up on Saturday, April 9, lining up next to 4A competition and the West High Trojans at West High School’s Hollingsworth Relays.
They stood the measure of their 4A competition, finishing seventh overall against 11 other larger school teams, with their presence felt in several events.
When Coach Sovers was asked what he felt about the boys competing against 4A competition, he smiled, peering through his darkened glasses, and said it would be good for them.

Spring football part two

Hawk Talk

Last week I talked about the offensive line, the tight ends and wide receivers.
This week I’ll look at the quarterbacks, fullbacks and running backs.

Quarterbacks

This is C.J. Beathard’s team.
C.J. earned that by helping the Hawkeyes start the season 12-0, a feat that never happened before in school history.
If you count C.J.’s first start a year before (a 24-10 win at Purdue), the 6-2, 208-pound quarterback from Tennessee won his first 13 games, also an Iowa record.
