Women’s basketball

Hawk Talk

Watching the Hawkeye women win their first exhibition, 61-35, over Lewis University last Sunday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena helped a little taking the sting out of the football loss.
It was also fun hanging out with Karley, a fourth grade student from Clear Creek Amana.
Karley is a big Hawkeye fan, especially the women’s basketball team.
Fourth grade was when I started following the Hawks and I never stopped.

Men’s basketball

Hawk Talk

I caught the Iowa men’s basketball opener at Carver last Friday (they beat Regis, 95-73) and came away with three observations.
No. 1: Peter Jok can score.
The 6-6 senior was 5-7 from 3-point land. He scored 16 straight points, played 28 minutes and had 28 points.
No. 2: Tyler Cook is the real deal.
Tyler started, played 26 minutes, scored 15 points and had six rebounds, three steals and one blocked shot. Tyler is so powerful and quick down low and that makes him tough to guard.
No. 3: The Hawks have a lot of work to do.

SOLON– Blizzard conditions put a damper on attendance at last year’s inaugural Soup and Hoops.
Second-year varsity girls basketball coach Lisa Bishop is hoping for better weather Friday, Nov. 18, when the Solon High School winter teams reach out to the community with the kickoff event.
Doors open at 5 p.m., with scrimmages for the freshman and sophomore boys’ and girls’ basketball teams beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Spartans exit playoffs, 28-14

Last season’s 3A champ steals Solon’s playoff football hopes

SOLON– The Pella Dutch stole the Solon Spartans’ football playoff hopes on Friday, Nov. 4, at Spartan Stadium with a 28-14 defeat. It was the last game for many members of the Spartan varsity team and they finished the season doing what they do, playing with heart, conviction and fortitude.
The Dutch advanced to compete at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls against Cedar Rapids Xavier on Thursday, Nov. 10.

CEDAR RAPIDS– After baffling the pundits with an upset win over Bettendorf on Oct. 28 in a Class 4A first round battle, the Iowa City West High Trojans made another statement a week later as they knocked off Cedar Rapids Prairie, 38-21, on Prairie’s John Wall Field in the quarterfinal round Friday, Nov. 4.

2016 Iowa City West High boys bowling preview

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– West High bowler Patrick Wood won the Class 3A State Bowling Tournament back in February. Odds are he would put up an equally impressive showing in the 2016-2017 season for Mike Mellecker and the Trojans. However, he’s moved out of town and his days in West High green are over.
But, Mellecker, the 10-year coach for West’s boys and girls bowling teams, is encouraged by the fact he has six returning varsity winners with a lot of match time.
On the flip side, though, he’ll need all six to be in top form on a squad with an even dozen bowlers.

Experience and newcomer alike boost Women of Troy on the lanes

IOWA CITY– Mike Mellecker has a problem, but it’s one he’s happy to have. Mellecker is the 10-year coach of the Iowa City West High boys and the girls bowling programs. His girls program went 4-10 overall last year with a 3-8 showing in the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC). He’s got 10 starters back, including an All-Conference Second Team selection and two Honorable Mention picks. Mellecker also has a bunch of newcomers to the sport.
So what’s his problem? What to do with so much firepower.

2016-17 CCA girls’ basketball preview: All of the pieces are in place for success

Clear Creek Amana varsity girls’ basketball

North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– P.J. Sweeney took over the top spot for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls basketball program in 2014 and has exuded optimism throughout his tenure. On the eve of the 2016-2017 season, Sweeney is even more encouraged and optimistic than ever about the Clippers’ prospects.
“With four-and-a-half starters and nine letter-winners returning, we have plenty of experience coming back,” Sweeney said.
But the news only gets better for the Creek Girls.
