Girls head outdoors

MT. VERNON– As their outdoor season kicks off, Solon’s Lady Spartans have a few strengths identified; yet know there is plenty yet to develop.
“For those first few indoor meets, most schools have girls missing; spring break or not ready (to step into competition) yet,” noted Solon girls coach Brent Sands. “We– and they– might have half a team, and don’t have the combinations together.”
Solon’s first taste of the great outdoors was set for Tuesday at Tipton. This Saturday, they will be at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids.

North Liberty Leader
By Chris Umscheid
TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity football co-head coaches Ronnie and Matt Hughes resigned Tuesday, March 21. Matt Hughes posted his letter of resignation on the program’s Facebook page saying, “Today was one of the toughest decisions I have had to make because this community and its kids mean so much to me. There are many reasons behind my decision that most of you will not ever know- but please know and understand that I’m doing what I feel is in the best interest of the kids of CCA and my family.”

Preview: State experience should translate to 2017 Women of Troy success

IOWA CITY– 2016 was another banner year for the Iowa City West High girls track and field program– a Mississippi Valley Conference Divisional Championship, nine events qualifying for the Drake Relays and 11 sent to the State Coed Meet. With the 2017 season underway, the Women of Troy return 10 state placewinners: Bailey Nock, Valerie Welch, Peyton Steva, Kia Noibi, Micaela Gravelin, Olivia Moore, Jessie Skopec, Gabby Skopec, Leah Dusterhoft and Chandler Haight.

Preview: No easy games

North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– Tim Benson has six seasons at the helm of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) boys varsity soccer program and one thing has become abundantly clear to him.
“There are no easy games in our conference.”
The Clippers went 13-5 last year and secured the WaMaC Conference West Division Title before falling to Central Clinton-DeWitt in a Class 2A substate semifinal. This year, the Creek Boys want to not only win another title, but also go even further.

Changes coming to WaMaC and MVC in ‘18

Liberty officially joins MVC, WaMaC loses two schools

North Liberty Leader
DES MOINES– Changes to the WaMaC and Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) in 2018 will likely lead to some new competitors for the Solon Spartans and the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers.
Liberty High School, under construction in North Liberty, has been accepted into the MVC starting with the 2018-19 academic year, making it a 15-team conference. Liberty will be an independent school for its first year (2017-2018) before joining the conference.

Preview: Clipper girls look for a better year on the links

North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– 2016 was a little rough on the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) girls golf team. The squad finished 13th out of 15 teams in the WaMaC Conference and were sixth out of seven teams in the conference’s West Division. Coach Cam Stockman doesn’t expect things to be any easier this year for the Clippers.
“The conference will probably be pretty tough,” he said. “We haven’t finished very high in the conference standings, so we are hoping to move up this year with a nice mix of experience and newcomers.”

Women of Troy win outdoor opener at Muscatine

NIT for Hawkeye men and women

It was bittersweet to see the Iowa men and women play in the NIT and WNIT last week at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Both had a shot at the NCAA tournament.
The men were listed in the first four out by the selection committee.
If they could have beaten Indiana in the first round of the Big Ten tourney, they might have gone to the Big Dance.
The women were also on the bubble and a first-round loss to Northwestern in the Big Ten Tournament might have cost them a chance to go dancing.
The good news was each had another chance to play in Carver.
