Lady Spartans handle Vikettes

Williamsburg and Regina prove to be too much for Solon’s girls

SOLON– The Solon girls are hanging tough.
Against the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes Friday night at home, that resulted in a 51-38 win.
Down 0-9 to start the first quarter, the Lady Spartans turned the tables in exciting fashion.
Shelby Gunnells put Solon on the board with a short jumper from outside the lane with less than 30 seconds to go in the first eight minutes, and Nichole Oberthien followed it up with a fast break reverse layup as the quarter ended.

Spartans win thriller over Williamsburg

Boys pick up two losses at Vinton and Regina

SOLON– It was a rollercoaster ride for the Solon boys’ basketball team last week.
After knocking off Williamsburg at home in heart-stopping fashion Tuesday, the Spartans lost two on the road– by one point to Vinton-Shellsburg and by five points to undefeated Iowa City Regina.
“We have not been our sharpest,” said acting head coach Miguel Villagrana. “We have to find a way mentally to put the game away. The challenge will be there for our kids.”

North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– It’s been a tough season for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers boys’ varsity basketball team with only four wins and (at this writing) nine losses, two of them back-to-back and by 20 points each.
After losing 71-50 to Benton Community on Tuesday, Jan. 21, Steve Ottoson’s Clippers came home for a Friday night tilt with Maquoketa, and found themselves in trouble early before losing, 57-37. The Cardinals improved to 5-9 with the win.

Women of Troy blitz the Bulldogs

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– Conventional wisdom suggests that when an 8-5 team takes on a 5-7 squad, the lesser-record holding team should have a tough fight on their hands if they have any hope of pulling off an upset.
Conventional wisdom did not take into account what happens when the West High Women of Troy return to the hardwood after a tough loss.
