Flashback to 1981 - part 2

Hawk Talk

This is a second look at the year 1981.
What a breakthrough year for the Iowa football team.
Hayden Fry was in his third year as head coach, Iowa had gone 19 seasons without having a winning season, and the Hawkeyes shared the Big Ten championship and went to the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1959.
Ronald Reagan was president and I had just moved back to North Liberty to finish my degree at the University of Iowa.
I graduated in the spring of 1981 and North Liberty was only 2,000 people.

Flashback to 1981

Hawk Talk

“Finally!” was the headline in “The Gazette” on Nov. 8, 1981.

“Hawks get first winning season since 1961 by ripping Purdue.”
Iowa beat Purdue 33-7 that cool November day at Kinnick Stadium and Gus Schrader wrote the story (I was there).
“That’s the greatest victory I’ve ever been associated with,” said a jubilant Hayden Fry. “At least we’ve got that streak of losing seasons off our back. Twenty years! That’s a long time.”
The Big Ten’s longest streak of one school losing to another was halted at 20. Iowa hadn’t beaten Purdue since 1960.
