Balanced scoring gives Solon win over Marion

Head coach Brad Randall not on the sidelines for Spartans

SOLON– The Spartans had no head coach, but they had four players in double-figures, and that helped lead to a double-digit win over Marion Friday in Solon.
Solon took a five-point lead at the end of the third quarter and stretched it out in the fourth quarter for a 77-64 win.
Nick Shelman led the Spartans’ scoring with 19 points, with help from Ethan Ahern (17 points), Emilio Villagrana (16) and Jaden Durr (12).
While Marion led most of the statistical categories, it was Solon’s shooting that gave the Spartans an edge.

Marion turns tables on Lady Spartans in fourth

Solon’s girls send Indians to the line 21 times in final frame

MARION– It was a tough loss.
Solon’s Lady Spartans couldn’t hold on to a fourth quarter lead after injury sidelined their leading scorer Friday night at Marion.
Solon dropped to 4-6 on the year with a 62-51 loss to the Indians.
According to head coach Tony Nicol, the Lady Spartans lost senior guard Rylee Smith to a knee injury about midway through the third quarter of the game.
“The team rallied and gained a small lead, but could not hold on down the stretch,” Nicol said.

Wrestlers third at Highland

MANCHESTER– Solon’s wrestlers split a double dual at Manchester last week and then placed second at a Highland tournament over the weekend.
The Spartans defeated Maquoketa, 51-27, and then fell to West Delaware by the same score Thursday, Jan. 9, at Manchester.
Louis Gnida, Trevor Nelson and Lance Evans remained undefeated in dual competition, according to head coach Brooks McLaren. Cole Fritz, Evans and Logan Linderbaum had pins against Maquoketa.
Evans, Gnida, Nelson and Danny Whitmore had pins against West Delaware.

The Hawkeye wrestlers picked up a big 24-6 win over fifth-ranked Oklahoma State Friday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Iowa had eight wins, a couple of upsets and some exciting matches.
Tony Ramos (133) started the year ranked No. 1 but has lost two matches so far this season. He only had two losses all of last year.
Tony came into the meet ranked fourth and his opponent, Jon Morrison, was ranked first.
Tony has the energy and talent to excite the Hawkeye crowd, and boy did he deliver against the Cowboys.

The women’s and men’s basketball team had two wins last week, plus the wrestlers dominated both of their matches.
The women started it out with a home win against Minnesota last Wednesday.
I don’t know if Iowa’s 78-71 victory against the Gophers was a must-win, but it was pretty close.
The Hawks started the season 0-2 including a loss at home against 15th-ranked Penn State, so to start 0-3 with two home losses would be tough to overcome.

Last week was the last time, until next October, I get to cover the four sports I’ve been writing about since I came on board in 2001.
On Monday, Dec. 30, the Hawkeye wrestlers won their 23rd Midlands Championship, crowned three champions and scored a tournament record 187.5 points.
How about redshirt freshman Thomas Gilman (125) beating defending Midlands champ Jarrod Garnet 6-1 to win his first title?
Tuesday, Dec. 31, saw the Hawkeye men’s basketball team, despite missing 17 free throws, take down Nebraska, 67-57, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
