Solon Boys win double OT thriller

Solon stops five-game losing streak with win over Western Dubuque

SOLON– What a way to stop a five-game skid.
It took two overtimes, but the Solon Spartans defeated conference rival Western Dubuque in a Friday night shoot-out, 93-91.
The score was knotted at 91 with 90 seconds left in the second overtime, and Solon wound down the clock for a final shot.
Senior guard Emilio Villagrana found junior Haltson Durr open on the back side for an open shot and the 93-91 lead with two seconds left, enough only for a desperation heave by Western Dubuque.

Lady Spartans start new year with two losses

SOLON– It’s been cold coming out of winter break.
The Solon varsity girls basketball team picked up its first losses of the season to start the new year, at home Jan. 6 against Clear Creek Amana (CCA) and at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids Saturday against unbeaten Western Dubuque.
CCA beat Solon 55-43, while Western Dubuque (No. 2 in Class 4A) put the Lady Spartans down 42-14.
In both games, Solon had a hard time getting buckets.
In the case of the Clippers, Solon also had a hard time handling senior Hanna Stokes, who led CCA with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

At Marshalltown Jan. 10, the Spartans defeated Grinnell, Marshalltown and North Polk before falling to Norwalk 31-29. Johnston beat Solon 49-12 in the final round.

TIFFIN– Jake Neubauer’s 17-point effort led the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers varsity boys basketball squad to a 64-52 WaMaC conference win over the rival Solon Spartans at home Tuesday, Jan. 6. It was the first time in nearly a decade that the boys program was able to post a win over Solon.
Solon led 13-7 after the first period and had a 26-18 lead at halftime.
“We looked tired, sluggish, we only shot 24 percent and we were only down eight (points),” CCA head coach Steve Ottoson said of the Clippers’ first half performance.

Hawk Talk

This is the way the seniors are ending their careers?
I was a little worried about Iowa’s bowl game last Friday against Tennessee.
The Volunteers are young and haven’t been to a bowl since 2010, so I thought they would come out with a lot of energy.
I also thought the Hawkeyes would at least show up...
When you can’t make tackles, can’t move the ball and trail 35-7 at half, you know it’s not your day.
The game ended 45-28 but it wasn’t that close.
I’m going to give you two plays that sum up Iowa’s season in a nutshell.

Women pick up road win against Stringer

The Iowa women also picked up a big road win at Rutgers, coached by Vivian Stringer, and bringing back a 79-72 victory.
When you look at some of statistics, you wonder how the Hawkeyes got their second Big Ten win of the season.
You start with rebounds– Iowa lost that battle 41-34 with Rutgers grabbing 18 offensive rebounds.
The Scarlet Knights also shot 16-18 from the free throw line while the Hawks were 10-22.
How did the Hawkeyes come through?
You start with the best 3-point shooter in Iowa history.

Road win

By Don Lund

Anytime you can open the season with a road win, it’s a good start all around.
The Hawkeye men’s basketball team went to Columbus last week and held off the Ohio State Buckeyes, 71-65.
The Hawks played solid defense, won the rebound battle 37-29, made shots down the stretch and got good play from the bench.
This is the second game in a row that Peter Jok started.
Peter came out strong, hitting a couple of free throws, a 3-pointer and a jump shot to help the Hawkeyes build a 19-10 lead with six minutes gone in the game.
