Iowa’s shotgun deer season preview

By Joe Wilkinson

DES MOINES– Iowa deer hunters likely stepped out into single-digit cold Saturday, the opener for the first shotgun season. That’s closer to typical weather than the balmy 30s and 40s the previous weekend. What better way to kick off the 60th anniversary of Iowa’s deer season, than by stocking up on hand warmers?

Women Go 2-0

Hawk Talk

Iowa’s women won two games last week and now have won six in a row.
The Hawkeyes picked up a big 97-91 win over 22nd-ranked Syracuse Thursday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
When I take pictures at Iowa games I usually sit under the basket that the Hawks will be shooting at in the first half.
That is also closest to the visitors’ bench.
When I saw the Syracuse players lined up at their bench I noticed a lot of size, length and depth.
They played 10 players and were 8-0 coming into Carver.

Hawkeye men with big win over Irish

The Hawkeye men are 9-1.
They opened with a big 98-93 win over Notre Dame last week at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
A really good back-and-forth game with the Hawks holding on.
Great shooting from the floor (57 percent), from 3-point range (54 percent) and from the free throw line, where the Hawkeyes were 25-28.
How about Iowa’s bench and the crowd?
The Fighting Irish had a seven-man rotation and Iowa went 10 deep.
In the first half, the Hawks had nine players score… none of them in double-figures.
