Boys toughen against ranked opponents

SOLON– Solon head coach Jeremy McMurrin knew it was going to be a tough week with three ranked opponents on the schedule.
The Spartan soccer team came away without a win but McMurrin was happy with the improvement he saw on the field.
“Minus a few people that have played club, we are just a bunch of athletes playing the game,” McMurrin said. “We have slowly started to improve our skills and knowledge of the game.”
Solon had won three in a row heading into the match-ups against ranked opponents, all on the road, including a 2-0 victory over Maquoketa April 28.

Solon girls fall in shoot-out to unbeaten Central DeWitt

DeWITT– It came down to penalty kicks for the Solon Lady Spartans and the Central DeWitt Sabers Friday, May 1.
And Central DeWitt was just one shot better.
On the wrong end of a 3-2 penalty-kick ending, Solon’s girls fell to undefeated Central DeWitt 1-0 in DeWitt.
“The DeWitt game was a fairly evenly matched game,” said head coach John Tucker. “Neither team was able to get the ball in the net during regulation, but we certainly had our opportunities. We played well, and fought hard.”
The loss dropped the Lady Spartans to 4-2 on the season, with a string of three road games this week.

Clippers break even in two days of play

CCA falls to West Liberty, sinks V-S

TIFFIN– Frank Sinatra once sang, “Riding high in April, shot down in May.” For Tim Benson and the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys soccer team, it was the opposite Monday and Tuesday, April 27 and 28.
The Clippers suffered their first loss of the season on Monday, falling 2-0 to West Liberty, but rebounded the next day with a 5-0 win over Vinton-Shellsburg.
“We caught a good team on a night they were playing well, and we didn’t play our best,” Benson said of the West Liberty game.

Spring Scrimmage

Hawk Talk

The cold and cloudy spring scrimmage held Saturday had a blend of good, bad and things to work on.
I’m going to start with the defense because I think they have a chance to be pretty special.

Defense

Iowa’s defense was and should be embarrassed after the blowout by Tennessee in the bowl game. The Volunteers racked up 283 yards on the ground, averaging 5.5 yards per carry. They were 17-22 passing with 178 yards, including a flea flicker pass that went for 49 yards and a score.

Gunnells wins second shot put championship

DES MOINES– Late Friday, Shelby Gunnells was still at the Drake track; watching as her teammates wrapped up their events in the high school division of the Drake Relays, one of the nation’s most prestigious track meets.
Her work was done.
“It feels like it was so long ago,” she said and smiled, thinking back to her morning in the shot put ring. That is where she rang up her second consecutive girls shot put title.
