Lady Spartans run away at Tipton

fourth place at J-Hawk Relays

CEDAR RAPIDS– Balance through the lineup and three key event champions kept the Spartans close in the 2015 J-Hawk Relays April 4 at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids.
Solon’s fourth place finish followed a runaway team title at Tipton earlier in the week.
Wins from Emma Moss in the 400-meter hurdles (1:10.24), Josie Durr in the high jump (5’2), Shelby Gunnells in the shot put (44’5) and points in eight other events kept Solon’s Class 3A girls in the mix throughout the meet, which featured larger, mostly 4A schools.

A big day for CCA on Tipton’s track

Wagner sets new shot put record, Brimeyer wins 100-meter hurdles

TIPTON– It was a successful day for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) track and field teams Tuesday, March 31, at the Tipton Co-Ed Meet, with the girls placing third in overall team points and the boys finishing fourth.
Drew Wagner broke an 11-year old record in the shot put and won the event with a 51’-6 1/4” throw while Natalie Brimeyer won in the 100-meter hurdles with her 16.81 seconds finish. Brimeyer also anchored the first-place shuttle hurdle relay with Mia Smith, Corrine Schwarting and Megan Lukas. The foursome won in 1:10.28.

New girls in the ranks for Clipper golf

North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– A new season always brings changes to a team with athletes lost to graduation, and newcomers to the squad. For the Clear Creek Amana girls golf team, you can add a new coach to the changes for 2015.
Cam Stockman has taken the helm of the program, taking over for Nathan Carlson, who led the team last year. Brad Muhlenbruck, a veteran of over 20 years coaching golf, will assist Stockman.

Strength in numbers for CCA girls soccer

TIFFIN– Matt Harding’s third season as head coach for Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity soccer program presents him with 10 returning starters for the 2015 season.
Make that 11 returning starters, Harding said, as Megan Hall, a senior, returns after sitting out all of 2014 due to an ACL injury.
Seniors Kelsey Hall, Bailey Mooney, Dacia Lipkea and Hannah Pfister are back. Midfielder Hall scored 14 goals last year and made 15 assists, a performance that earned her a First Team All-Conference spot.

Clear Creek Amana Show Choir dazzles in debut season

TIFFIN— This is the first year Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School students have orchestrated a show choir, and they’re making a joyful noise.
The group, 38 strong, has competed at the State Contest, the Keokuk “Power City” competition, as well as the Marion Invitational. So far, the group has placed third and third runner-up, with soloist Sage Spiker earning “Best Male Soloist” honors.

Spring football 2015

Hawk Talk

There were plenty of questions for head coach Kirk Ferentz last Wednesday as the Hawkeye football team opened spring practice.
The first 10 minutes were all about the quarterback situation.
The rumor mill was saying that Jake Rudock, a two-year starter with a 14-11 record, would be transferring and playing somewhere else next year.
For once, the rumors were true as coach Ferentz said he has signed a release for Jake to explore his options about transferring.
That leaves C.J. Beathard as the only quarterback with game experience.

Hawkeye women bow out

The Iowa women’s basketball season ended last Friday in Oklahoma as they lost to a tough and good-shooting Baylor team, 81-66.
The Baylor Bears controlled the boards (45-35), had balanced scoring (four in double-figures) and had a tough defense that helped knock Iowa out of the NCAA tournament.
You could argue that the Bears, even though they were all over the Hawkeyes, got some nice no-calls as they came away with only nine fouls while Iowa had 17.
Baylor was 16-18 from the free throw line, Iowa only 3-7.
Only one Iowa starter (Samantha Logic) shot free throws, so you do the math.

Finding balance

Local kayak fishing enthusiasts cast around for new club members

NORTH LIBERTY– If you think you couldn’t reel in a 25-pound catfish in a kayak, Scott Shrader would prove you wrong.
Shrader, of North Liberty, has always been a fisherman. As a child, he went bass fishing with his father and competed in fishing tournaments as he got older.
He bought a kayak because he also loved paddling around on the water, and a kayak offered something a little different.
“Kayaking a relaxing sport, and you don’t have to deal with the gas and maintenance and expense of having a motor boat,” said Shrader.

Clipper runners set a path toward state

North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– It’s already been a busy season for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) girls track and field program with indoor meets at the University of Northern Iowa, Iowa State University and Cornell College (the WaMaC Indoor meet), while the outdoor season started Saturday, March 28, with Iowa City Regina’s Bob Brown Invitational.
