Are you ready for some Hawkeye football?

Hawk Talk

Iowa Hawkeye football media day is Thursday, Aug. 8, so it’s time to talk some football.
For the next couple of weeks I’ll be looking at the schedule plus breaking down the offense, defense and special teams.
The schedule has seven homes games and three of the first four at Kinnick Stadium.
The home opener against Northern Illinois could be good look at how the season will go.
The Hawkeyes have won the last 12 opening games. The last time they lost the first game was 2000, Kirk Ferentz’s second year.

Lady Spartans finish sixth

FORT DODGE– Solon entered the state softball tournament last week ranked No. 3 in Class 4A. The Lady Spartans had lost two games the entire season, both of them to eventual 4A champion Dallas Center-Grimes.
High-powered offense? Check. Solon scored 404 runs on the year on 555 hits.
Unhittable pitching? Check. Opponents bat a measly .168 when facing a Lady Spartan on the mound.

NLYBS continues to be a big hit for NL youth

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball league (NLYBS) recently completed its 21st year of providing recreational level baseball and softball opportunities for nearly 900 boys and girls, ages four to 13. While the majority of kids playing in NLYBS are from North Liberty, the league also has participants from Coralville, Solon, Tiffin and other area communities. In the 2013 summer season, NLYBS had 72 teams playing from May through June, with junior and senior softball and baseball teams involved in tournament play to complete the season.

State hopes dashed in the dust

WILLIAMSBURG– The 2013 baseball season came to a sudden end last week for both the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers and Iowa City West High Trojans in substate action.
The Clippers fell 11-3 Tuesday (July 23) on the road in Williamsburg against the rival Raiders. The class 3A Substate 5, District 10 game was a continuation of Monday’s suspended game, which was halted at the end of four innings due to lightning. The contest was tied 3-3 at the time.

Solon settles for sixth place at 4A softball tournament

Lady Spartans defeat Waverly-Shell Rock

SOLON– The Lady Spartans finished the 4A state softball tournament with a 1-2 record Wednesday, good for sixth place.
Solon defeated Waverly-Shell Rock 10-0 in five innings Wednesday in the consolation final, then fell to Winterset 7-4 in the consolation final Wednesday evening.
The Lady Spartans ended up in the consolation bracket after a 6-1 upset Tuesday at the hands of Washington.
The girls rebounded against Waverly-Shell Rock, scoring five runs in each of the first two innings. The first inning featured doubles by Taylor Nearad and Kara Misel, and a two-run home run by Riley Ogden.

Lone senior Theairra Taylor prepares to lead

Hawk Talk

Theairra Taylor started all 34 games last season for the Hawkeye basketball team as a junior.
She also played in all 31 games in her sophomore season.
Not bad for a player who had missed 53 games in her first two years because of knee surgeries.
The Hawkeyes started strong, knocking off four top-20 teams last season early in the year. They lost five straight Big Ten games in a row but still finished with 21 wins and hosted the first round of the NCAA tournament.
They beat Miami in the first game, then lost to Notre Dame, who went to the Final Four, in the second game.
