Lady Spartans start the season 4-0

Girls pick up wins on the road early in the season

SOLON– Last year, the Solon girls varsity basketball team started out 0-3 and were never able to string more than two wins together consecutively.
This year’s squad has been able to mirror that in reverse.
The Lady Spartan basketball team has started the season with four straight wins, with a close 53-50 win on the road at Benton Community Friday night, and a 44-25 victory at Washington Saturday.
“We knew going in that the Benton was going to be a great test on the road,” said Solon head coach Tony Nicol. “They are so well coached and mix things up both defensively and offensively.”

Spartan boys pull out thriller against Bobcats

SOLON– It went right down to the wire, but the Solon boys basketball team won its home opener Friday night against the team that ended its season a year ago.
A depleted Spartan squad defeated Benton Community, 63-59, to move to 2-0 on the young season.
Starting guard Halston Durr is out four-to-six weeks, according to head coach Jason Pershing, and guard Emilio Villagrana and Jacob Coons fouled out in the fourth quarter when Solon had taken control of the game.

TIFFIN– The 2014-15 Clear Creek Amana (CCA) boys varsity basketball squad is a veteran team, and they showed their stripes in the season opener against West Delaware.
The Clippers won 65-55 Tuesday, Dec. 2, to start the season on a winning note after battling for nearly every point.
“There were so many peaks and valleys in that game,” coach Steve Ottoson said afterward.

McGlaughlin sets IC West record in butterfly

Warriors slip past Trojan swimmers

North Liberty Leader
CORALVILLE– The West High Trojan boys swim team lost their season opening meet to the Cedar Rapids Washington Warriors, 89-81, at the Coralville Recreation Center.
Mark McGlaughlin struck a positive note for the Trojans, not only by winning the 50-yard freestyle, but also the 100-yard butterfly with a record-setting effort. McGlaughlin, a junior, won the event in 50.74 seconds, breaking the previous time of 50:77, which was set in 1994 by Mike Zimmerman.

Vidhamali sets two-game bowling record

IOWA CITY– The West High boys bowling team knocked over Cedar Rapids Prairie Friday, Dec. 5, at Colonial Lanes in Iowa City, winning the varsity match 2,892 to 2,470.

The varsity girls, led by Brooke Kreiss’ 353, fell 2,519 to 2,110. Prairie also took the junior varsity (JV) boys match 2,480 to 2,091 and the girls JV match 1,974 to 1,421.

Heartbreak and disappointment

When I looked at the schedule and the returning players the Iowa Hawkeye football team had coming back this season, I thought there was a good chance the Hawks could win nine or 10 games.
If they would have scored three more points against Wisconsin or one more in regulation against Nebraska they would have... but they didn’t and with the 37-34 overtime loss to Nebraska Friday at Kinnick Stadium, the Hawkeyes fell to 7-5.
That’s really disappointing.
When Iowa was up 24-7 with 8:45 left in the third quarter I thought there was no way the Cornhuskers come back.
