Women of Troy win state XC qualifying meet

Skopec wins girls meet, Borde takes boys for Trojan runners

North Liberty Leader
CEDAR FALLS– The Iowa City West High Women of Troy and West High Trojans will be competing in the 2014 Class 4A state cross country meet, set for Saturday, Nov. 1, at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge.
Both squads won their qualifying meets Thursday, Oct. 23, in Cedar Falls in a format that advances the top three teams and top 10 individuals.

A little short

Hawk Talk

When I did the preseason schedule and Maryland was on it, I have to admit I don’t ever remember seeing the Terrapins play football.
The preseason magazines said they had some great wide receivers, a good quarterback and a great kicking game. They were right!
I thought Maryland would score against the Hawks, but I also thought Iowa could score against them.
I was kind of right as the Maryland offense scored 31 points, Iowa scored 31 but a pick-six by the Terrapins ended up being the difference in the game; Maryland 38, Iowa 31.
Dropped passes, penalties and poor tackling.

Spartans run over Western Dubuque’s unbeaten district record

Hopes for district title still alive

EPWORTH– Once again, offense, defense and special teams helped the Solon football team to a big win.
The Spartans traveled to Epworth Friday for a showdown with Western Dubuque and came away with a 55-26 win, setting up a three-way tie atop the Class 3A District 4 standings going into the final week of the regular season.
Western Dubuque entered the game unbeaten in the district, having upset Cedar Rapids Xavier 7-6 in week six. Solon’s lone loss of the season came at Xavier in week three, a 28-0 shut out.
Since then, the Spartans have outscored their opponents, 221-64.

Solon to host state qualifier Oct. 23

XC girls finish fifth at WaMaC meet

IOWA CITY– A tough field faces Solon’s girls, as state qualifying cross country meets are held around the state this week. Only the top three teams– and top 10 individual runners– from each class move on to the Nov. 1 state meet in Fort Dodge.
The Lady Spartans face four ranked schools in 3A, but teams they have run against this season. Solon– ranked in the top-15 for several weeks earlier this season– would have to knock off at least two... and hold off any late season surprise team... to return to state.

Boys ninth at conference, district next

IOWA CITY– It was Mount Vernon’s race to win or lose, and the Mustangs responded with four top-10 runners at the WaMaC cross country meet Oct. 16 to stride away with the title. Mount Vernon’s 40 points– the totaled places of its top five runners– provided a comfortable margin at the University of Iowa Ashton Cross Country Course in Iowa City.

Lady Spartans roll over Anamosa

VINTON– The postseason has arrived for the Solon volleyball team.
The Lady Spartans swept Anamosa to end the regular season Oct. 14, and then rebounded from an opening loss to Maquoketa in WaMaC pool play Oct. 16 to defeat Benton Community and Clear Creek Amana (CCA).
Solon was scheduled to face Center Point-Urbana in WaMaC bracket play Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Mount Vernon.

TAMA– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity volleyball team extended its winning streak to seven matches and improved its record to 18-6-0 with a 3-0 road sweep of the South Tama County Trojans Tuesday, Oct. 14.

Clipper boys 7th at WaMaC XC meet

Tener, Keith set pace

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– The University of Iowa Ashton Course was the site for the 2014 WaMaC Conference Cross Country Meet Thursday, Oct. 16.
Mount Vernon-Lisbon took the boys meet with 40 team points while the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers were seventh with 177. Rival Solon was ninth overall with 247. Center Point-Urbana’s Josh Yeager won the race in 16:10 while Jacob Tener led the Clippers with his 12th-place finish in 17:15.

West wins 3-0 over Dubuque

Women of Troy tarnish Wahlert’s Golden Eagles

North Liberty Leader
DUBUQUE– The West High Women of Troy improved to 22-9 overall for the 2014 season with a 3-0 sweep of the Dubuque Wahlert Golden Eagles Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the Eagles’ nest in Dubuque.
West won 25-16, 25-20 and 25-14 in an effort led by Madi Miller, Mikaela Morgan, Emma Norris, Ali Tauchen, Emily Halvorsen, Madi Ford, Laynie Whitehead and Madi Fay with three kills each. Ford had three ace serves as well, while Fay made two and Whitehead had one.
Defensively, Morgan and Tauchen led with two blocks each.

Now we’re talking

I don’t know about you, but I was getting tired of hearing about who should start... Jake Rudock or C.J. Beathard.
Jake has been out for a game and a half but looked sharp in the Hawkeyes’ 45-29 Homecoming win last Saturday at Kinnick Stadium.
If Indiana had two quarterbacks, like Iowa, they might have made it a closer game, but when starting quarterback Nate Sudfeld went out with a shoulder injury in the first half, the Hoosiers were toast.
Jake came out strong, going 9-11 for 128 yards and two touchdowns in the first quarter.

Spartans smother Cardinals

SOLON– The defense made some big hits and the offense made some big plays.
And that added up to a 42-0 win for the Solon Spartan football team Friday night against visiting Maquoketa.
The Spartans moved to 6-1 on the season with a conference showdown set for Friday, visiting 5-2 Western Dubuque at Epworth. Western Dubuque remains undefeated in Class 3A District 4 competition, with Cedar Rapids Xavier and Solon close behind, each sporting a single loss.
Maquoketa dropped to 1-6.
Solon scored early and often Friday at Spartan Stadium, taking a 28-0 lead into halftime.

West Delaware halts Lady Spartan comeback

Solon can’t overcome unforced errors in 3-1 loss to No. 2 team

SOLON– West Delaware came into its match with Solon having lost only a single game in the season.
Afterward, the No. 2 volleyball squad in Class 4A had only lost two.
West Delaware came to Solon for a WaMaC East showdown Oct. 9, and came away with a 3-1 win over the No.1-ranked (3A) Lady Spartans.
Solon fell behind 2-0 in closely-contested sets (25-22, 25-23) and roared back to take the third set 25-11, but West Delaware returned the favor in the decisive fourth set with a 25-16 win.
