CCA vexes Vikettes volleyball

CCA 3-1 over Vinton Shellsburg

VINTON– Clear Creek Amana (CCA)’s Clipper varsity volleyball team improved its record to 17-6 overall Tuesday, Oct. 7, with a 3-1 win on the road against Vinton-Shellsburg.

Iowa Hawkeye men reload

Hawk Talk

By Don Lund

The Iowa Hawkeye men’s basketball team lost two starters from last year, Devyn Marble and Melsahn Basabe. Devyn was the leading scorer and Mel did a great job defensively as well as hitting the boards.
Zach McCabe also had some starts and did a great job of coming off the bench.
The cupboard isn’t bare with three starters back and three other players that have started.
Throw in junior college All-American Trey Dickerson and I like Iowa’s chances.
Media day was last Thursday, Oct. 2, and there was a good vibe in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Solon rolls 54-14

Spartans score on offense, defense and special teams at Central DeWitt

DeWITT– Solon countered Central DeWitt’s triple-option with its own version- scoring on offense, defense and special teams.
The Spartans delivered a convincing 54-14 loss to the Sabers on the road Friday night in DeWitt, dropping Central DeWitt to 3-3 and moving the sixth ranked (3A) Spartans to 5-1.
Brandon Kramer rushed for three touchdowns, Brandan Childs ran for two, Spencer Lawson returned an interception 28 yards for a score and Kramer provided a 57-yard punt return for Solon. Blayze Griffis and Bo Black also hooked up for a 53-yard strike for the Spartans’ final score.

Spartan volleyball host No. 2 (4A) West Delaware

WaMaC title on the line Thursday

SOLON– It’s No. 1 in Class 3A against No. 2 in Class 4A Thursday, Oct. 9, as Solon hosts West Delaware in a match pitting the two top teams in the WaMaC East against each other.
Currently, West Delaware is sporting a 28-0 record going into action Tuesday against Dyersville Beckman, with only a single set lost for the season.
The Lady Spartans, 18-4 heading into a home match against Central DeWitt Tuesday, defeated Western Dubuque last week and made it to the semifinals at a Waverly tournament over the weekend, falling to No. 7 (2A) Grundy Center.

Girls take second at Williamsburg

SOLON– The mid-week pumpkin patch detour did not disrupt the schedule. There are still meets to run, as conference (Oct. 16) and districts (Oct. 23) loom ahead. Solon’s girls racked up a runner-up finish in the four-school Williamsburg invitational Sept. 29. The boys were fourth there in a five-team field.

West tripped up in overtime

West falls to Bettendorf, 28-27

IOWA CITY– “Gut-wrenching.”
That’s how West High football coach Garrett Hartwig described his squad’s 28-27 loss in overtime to Bettendorf Friday, Oct. 3, at home.
“I got more respect for the 53 men in that room (gesturing toward the locker room) right now than anybody else,” Hartwig said. “At this point in the season, it’s about executing. Bettendorf executed, credit goes to them they’re a great program.” Hartwig said his Trojans were getting better, but “we’re not where we need to be yet.”

Raiders scuttle Clippers’ senior night

TIFFIN– Seven seniors were recognized for their contributions to the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) volleyball program on Senior Night, Tuesday, Sept. 30. Lauren Stopko, McKenzie Fuller, Bailey Butler, Dacia Lipkea, Hanna Stokes, Natalie Brimeyer and Jana Sefzik were honored just before the varsity march with the Williamsburg Raiders.
Unfortunately for the seventh-ranked (in Class 4A) Clippers, the un-ranked Raiders spoiled the special night by winning three games to two in an upset.

Down two games to one, West High surged to a 25-20 victory to tie the match. The fifth and final set went to the Lions, 15-9.

Hawks get defensive

Hawk Talk

All the Hawkeye fans, including my home boys from the Lodge, got their wish last Saturday as C. J. Beathard got to start against Purdue.
Jake Rudock was still injured, so C.J. got the first start of his career.
With 11 minutes left in the second quarter, I wondered if the C.J. fans were still happy.
Iowa trailed 10-0, C.J. had thrown a pick-six, and the Hawkeyes didn’t have a first down.
I’ve got to give C.J. credit. He didn’t get down on himself, started making plays and the Hawks outscored the Boilermakers 24-0 and won their fourth straight road game, 24-10.
