Hawks take down Cowboys

The Hawkeye wrestlers picked up a big 24-6 win over fifth-ranked Oklahoma State Friday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Iowa had eight wins, a couple of upsets and some exciting matches.
Tony Ramos (133) started the year ranked No. 1 but has lost two matches so far this season. He only had two losses all of last year.
Tony came into the meet ranked fourth and his opponent, Jon Morrison, was ranked first.
Tony has the energy and talent to excite the Hawkeye crowd, and boy did he deliver against the Cowboys.

PERFECTION

The women’s and men’s basketball team had two wins last week, plus the wrestlers dominated both of their matches.
The women started it out with a home win against Minnesota last Wednesday.
I don’t know if Iowa’s 78-71 victory against the Gophers was a must-win, but it was pretty close.
The Hawks started the season 0-2 including a loss at home against 15th-ranked Penn State, so to start 0-3 with two home losses would be tough to overcome.

Hawkeyes - Up and down for UI sports

Last week was the last time, until next October, I get to cover the four sports I’ve been writing about since I came on board in 2001.
On Monday, Dec. 30, the Hawkeye wrestlers won their 23rd Midlands Championship, crowned three champions and scored a tournament record 187.5 points.
How about redshirt freshman Thomas Gilman (125) beating defending Midlands champ Jarrod Garnet 6-1 to win his first title?
Tuesday, Dec. 31, saw the Hawkeye men’s basketball team, despite missing 17 free throws, take down Nebraska, 67-57, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Not meant to be

Iowa lost to the LSU Tigers 21-14 last week in the Outback Bowl on New Year’s Day. It just wasn’t meant to be.
First Mike Meyer, the second-best field goal kicker ever at Iowa (Nate Kaeding is number one), missed a 35-yard chip shot in the third quarter with no wind.
Then Kevonte Martin-Manley fumbled a punt, LSU recovered and drove for a score. Kevonte hasn’t done that all year.
Finally John Lowdermilk had a pick-six as he intercepted a pass on his own 28, broke free and crossed the goal line… but he dropped the ball before he scored.

Solon girls push past Maquoketa

SOLON– The temperatures were freezing outside, and the shooting inside was almost as cold.
Solon’s girls played back-to-back home games coming out of winter break Friday and Saturday, defeating Maquoketa, 37-31, and then falling to Anamosa, 28-25.
Both the Lady Spartans and their opponents had a hard time finding the bottom of the basket.
Hosting the Maquoketa Cardinals, Solon trailed 16-15 at the half, but held Maquoketa without a point in third quarter to take a 25-16 lead into the fourth.

Spartans outlast Cardinals in 2-OT thriller

MAQUOKETA– The Spartans already had one overtime win under their belts this season, why not another?
And why not make it two overtimes?
That’s what it took for Solon to down the Maquoketa Cardinals, 52-51, Friday on the road in Maquoketa.
Austin Miller made two free throws with 15 seconds remaining in the second overtime to give the Spartans the lead for good, and Maquoketa’s subsequent pass was deflected, preventing the Cardinals from getting off a shot before time expired.

Winning streak continues

67-50 win over Hempstead makes 59 consecutive wins

IOWA CITY– It was a decisive win for the West High Trojans Friday, Jan. 3, as the Mustangs of Dubuque Hempstead rode into town. The winning streak continued for West. Yet coach Steve Bergman was not the happiest man on Melrose Avenue.
“We’ve played better than we played tonight,” he said in a post-game interview. “It was a game without much flow. We had a tough time staying out of foul trouble.” But, “you’ve got to win them. We didn’t play great and still won, so that’s a good thing.”

Clippers pick up a win from Vinton-Shellsburg

TIFFIN– Nile Rourke summed it up very succinctly.
“It feels good to start the New Year off right.”
The junior was talking about his Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers’ 55-44 win Thursday night (Jan. 2) at home against the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings. The win improved the squad’s record to 3-5 and took away some of the sting of a pre-Christmas loss to West Branch. “It was good to be in control and to keep it for the whole game. We’ve had trouble finishing games, so it’s about time we played a full game and finished and won a game,” Rourke said.

Hawkeye Women 12-2

The Iowa Hawkeye women’s basketball team finished the non-conference schedule with a 88-62 win over North Dakota at Carver-Hawkeye Arena Saturday.
“I thought we had a slow start, but once we got into the flow of this thing our fast break really got us back into this game,” said head coach Lisa Bluder. “Three-point shooting at the end of the half really helped.”
That’s the fun part of watching this team… when they get on a roll.
It all starts with Samantha Logic, who had 21 points and eight assists.

Hawk men on break

The Hawkeye men’s basketball team had a nine-day layoff before opening the Big Ten season at home against Nebraska, Tuesday, Dec. 31.
In the Hawkeyes’ last game, which was at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Dec. 22, they rolled over Arkansas Pine-Bluff, 86-61, and raised their record to 11-2.
It was great to see Josh Oglesby back. The 6-6 sharp shooter from Cedar Rapids hit his first four shots, all 3-pointers and scored 13 points. He played 20 minutes, had two rebounds, two assists and two steals.

West splits with CR Xavier

Trojans still undefeated, girls slide further behind

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– Neither (freezing) rain, nor sleet, nor slippery roads could keep the men’s and women’s varsity basketball double-dip against the Saints of Cedar Rapids Xavier from occurring Friday, Dec. 20, in the Iowa City West home gym.
It was a split night for West with the Women of Troy coming up short, 49-46, and the Trojans pounding the ball for a 75-41 win. Mikaela Morgan led the women with 16 points and nine rebounds while David Dileo led the way for the men with 19. Wyatt Lohaus had 18 points.

WB Bears just one basket better

West Branch 57, CCA 55

TIFFIN– It was a pre-Christmas heartbreaker for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) girls as the West Branch Bears visited for a men’s/women’s double-header on a snowy evening Saturday, Dec. 21. The Bears notched a 57-55 win and dropped the Clippers to a 2-6 record to close out 2013.
The game was tied 12-12 after the first eight minutes and the Clippers were down 26-22 at the half before battling back to an ever so slim 40-39 lead going into the final period. Kelsey Hall led CCA with 18 points, Kiley Seelman put in 16 and Hanna Stokes had a 15-point night.
