Enjoy the snow with 'Ski and S'mores' Feb. 3 IOWA CITY- University of Iowa Recreational Services is hosting its annual Moonlight "Ski and S'mores" from 8 until 10 p.m., Friday, Feb. 3, at Macbride Nature Recreation Area. This event is free and open to the public. No registration is required.
Ski rentals are available from the Outdoor Recreation Center at 319-384-1225. If there is no snow on Feb. 3, the event will be cancelled.

Scout troop 216 to host chili supper Feb. 4 NORTH LIBERTY- North Liberty Boy Scout Troop 216 will host its 32nd annual chili supper from 4:30 until 7 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 4, at the North Liberty Community Center.
Tickets are $5 with children age five and under admitted free. The dinner includes all-you-can-eat meat or vegetarian chili, bread, drinks and a variety of homemade desserts, including traditional scout cobbler.
The dinner is the troop's primary annual fundraising event. Proceeds help cover the cost of high adventure trips, summer camp and other activities for the troop's 25 Scouts. Tickets are available at the door or by contacting Scoutmaster Kevin Kurka, 319-665-9076.
Blood drive to be held Feb. 6 NORTH LIBERTY- The University of Iowa DeGowin Blood Center will hold a blood drive at the North Liberty Recreation Center on Monday, Feb. 6, from 4 until 7 p.m.
In an average week, UIHC patients need nearly 600 units of blood products. One pint of donated blood can help save the lives of several people.
To be eligible to donate blood a person must:
• Be 17 years old or 16 with parental consent;
• Weigh at least 110 pounds;
• Be cold or flu symptom free for five days;
• Pass a mini-physical and medical history inquiry;
• Have a photo ID;
• Know Social Security or drivers license number;
• Drink fluids and have a meal prior to donation;
• Bring a list of current medications;
• Bring a list of places visited outside the U.S. within the last three years.

Free dance classes begin Feb. 11 NORTH LIBERTY- Area teens ages 13-18 are invited to sign up now for a free, four-week session of dance classes taught by the University of Iowa Dancers In Company, held at the North Liberty Recreation Center on Saturday mornings from Feb. 11 to March 4.
The series of hour-long workshops will teach components of hip-hop, jazz and modern dance, as well as opportunities to learn combinations from the company's repertoire. On week four, participants will travel as a group to the University of Iowa to see Dancers in Company perform at 1 p.m.
Classes are geared toward people ages 13-18, with no previous experience necessary. Registration is free, but required for participation. Ten participants are needed in order to host this event. This free workshop is offered through a partnership with the North Liberty Community Library and Recreation Center, Arts Share and the University of Iowa Dancers In Company.

Sons of the Oxford American Legion sponsor spaghetti dinner Jan. 28 OXFORD- The Oxford Sons of the American Legion- Squadron 537 will sponsor an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner on Saturday, Jan. 28, from 3 until 7 p.m. at the Oxford American Legion, 128 East Main St., Oxford. The cost is $7 adults and $5 kids 12 and under.
Proceeds benefit English River Outfitters and the Oxford American Legion.

Mind-Body course at NL's MercyCare NORTH LIBERTY- Feel better with mind and body skills. Mercy Medical Center is offering a course focused on the connection between your physical health and the state of your mind and spirit. Simply by learning some easy skills you can gain more control over stress, pain and fatigue- and just feel better overall.
The course is facilitated by Helen Kudos, social work clinician at Mercy Family Counseling, who has advanced training in mind-body medicine.
The course is made up of eight, one-hour sessions. The sessions will be held Thursdays from 11 a.m. until noon, beginning Feb. 2, at MercyCare North Liberty, 1765 Lininger Ln., North Liberty. The cost for the course is $30.
Participants will learn mind-body skills in a small group setting, enhanced with group discussion and support, featuring following mind-body skills: soft belly, body scan, visualization and imagery, drawing from the right side, movement, eating meditation, dialogue with symptom and understanding triggers to stress. Swisher Legion to sponsor chili cook-off Feb. 5 SWISHER- The Swisher American Legion will hold a "Chili Cook-off" on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 5. A $5 entry fee includes participants' all-you-can-eat chili. Entries must arrive at the Swisher American Legion by 2 p.m. (no exceptions). One entry per person; one crock-pot per entry.
Prizes are first place $100, second place $50, third place $25. Everyone is welcome for the $5 all-you-can-eat chili after the judging. Call Ron for more information at 319-857-4315.

Fine amnesty month at North Liberty Community Library NORTH LIBERTY- January is fine amnesty month at the North Liberty Community Library. Fines on all overdue material returned in January will be forgiven. It does not matter how overdue the material is, even years overdue. The library would just appreciate getting their material back.
Existing fines on materials already returned will not be forgiven but may be paid in cash, in food for fines, worked off or paid through arranged reading times.
