8th-ranked Tigers devour Bolts

Liberty girls fall, 73-19, to Cedar Falls

NORTH LIBERTY– It was another rough night for the Bolts as the eighth-ranked in Class 5A Cedar Falls Tigers mauled them, 73-19, at home, on Tuesday, Jan. 14.
The Tigers charged to an 11-0 lead in the first quarter, prompting Coach Jaime Brandt to call for a time-out to regroup her ladies. Freshman Kennedy Daugherty put the Bolts on the scoreboard, but Liberty still trailed, 15-2. Seniors Sam McPherson and Neshy Byrd added one basket apiece as the period ended with Cedar Falls ahead, 24-6. Byrd scored twice in the second quarter making it a 27-10 deficit for the Lightning, while a two-point basket from freshman Ava Meyer made it 32-12. Liberty trailed, 38-12, at halftime.
The Tigers roared in the third period with a 13-0 run, triggering the continuous clock, and prompting another Liberty time-out. McPherson finally broke through with a two-point basket in the final minute of the quarter as Cedar Falls led, 57-14, going into the final eight minutes. Byrd scored two field goals in the fourth quarter, while McPherson drained a free throw for Liberty’s final point of the night.
The loss dropped Liberty to 1-9, while Cedar Falls improved to 8-3. Byrd led the Lightning with 10 points.
Liberty’s junior varsity (JV) girls won their contest, 48-36, with 10 points from sophomore Kinsley Robertson.
Iowa City West High’s Trojans and Women of Troy invade the Bolts for a girl/boy doubleheader on Friday, Jan. 24. The action starts at 4:30 p.m. with the JV girls, continues at 6 p.m. with the varsity girls and sophomore boys tipping off, and wraps up with the varsity boys taking the floor at 7:30 p.m. The varsity girls travel to Cedar Rapids Xavier on Saturday, Jan. 25, for a game originally scheduled for Friday, Jan. 10, but postponed due to weather. The game starts at 3:30 p.m. Dubuque Hempstead visits on Tuesday, Jan. 28, with a 7:30 p.m. varsity start, and the Bolts round out the month with a trip to Waterloo East High School on Friday, Jan. 31.
