Animal nuisance call results in dog injury

NORTH LIBERTY– A North Liberty police officer, responding to a call about a barking dog, wounded the dog by firing his gun when the dog broke loose from his chain and charged at the officer.
According to a press release issued by the North Liberty Police Department:
On May 11 at around 3:15 a.m., The North Liberty Police Department responded to a barking dog at 253 Holiday Lodge Road. The responding officer located a dog barking outside the residence. The officer knocked on a window and wall trying to get a response from the resident. The officer got no response and thought he could get to the front door as the dog’s cable was tangled around an object.
The dog continued growling at the officer as he knocked on the front door and the dog then pulled the cable free from the object and charged the officer. The officer started back peddling to get away from the attacking dog.
The dog still had 10 feet of free cable and was with three to six inches of biting the officer. The officer fired his service weapon at the dog and the dog then stopped and returned to the front door. The officer then called for assistance and knocked on a window again.
Blood was discovered on the deck from the dog. The officer then retrieved a catchpole and kennel after back up arrived and as they were loading up the dog into the kennel the owner then came to the front door. The owner and dog were transported for medical attention for the dog.
The dog had a minor laceration to his left rear foot and was treated and released. The dog and owner were transported back to the residence.
The owner, Ryan Schaffer, was issued citations for Harboring Dangerous Animals (North Liberty City Code 6.02.05) and Nuisances (Barking Dog) (North Liberty City Code 6.02.020(A).
North Liberty Police Chief Jim Warkentin was unavailable for comment prior to this newspaper’s deadline.
