Barkers again lead the way for CCA XC

Brandon wins for varsity boys, Haidyn leads varsity girls with runner-up finish at Benton Community Invitational

WILLIAMSBURG– The Williamsburg Sports Complex was “home” for Benton Community’s invitational cross country meet on Saturday, Sept. 12, due to derecho damage. The field of competitors expanded as Clear Creek Amana (CCA) became a late addition due to its own weather issue, namely, a Thursday, Sept. 10, rainout in Fairfield.
Brandon Barker, a senior, won the varsity boys race in 17:03.7 and led the Clippers to a second-place team finish behind champion Mount Vernon-Lisbon. CCA’s Gavin Zillyette was sixth in 17:40.9. The Clippers beat out Cedar Rapids metro teams Kennedy (third) and Jefferson (fourth) with the runner-up showing.
“The boys are really starting to come into themselves. It’s great to have the crew all together, finally, and we are really starting to figure out what kind of team we are,” said Coach Ben Robison. “I’m very pleased with races today. We definitely know what our area of needed improvement is, and we’ll start to make these changes in training! (A) Big shout-out to Mr. Barker on the race win today!”
Haidyn Barker, a sophomore, crossed the finish line three seconds behind race winner Bethany Smeed of Cedar Rapids Kennedy to take second place, and lead the Clippers to a fifth-place team finish. Barker finished in 20:33.2 to Smeed’s 20:30.5.
Williamsburg won the varsity girls’ event, followed by Kennedy, Mount Vernon-Lisbon, Benton and the Creek Girls.
“The girls quietly had a great morning,” Robison said. “We’ve got some kids like Allie Kounkel who are really stepping up to fill big roles, and it’s awesome to see.”
Kounkel, a junior, was 28th in 23:22.1. “We put together a solid meet,” Robison added, “And again, know where our areas of needed improvement are. I think we’re ready to get back to work this next week or so to start chipping away at some of these goals!”
