Boys fall to No.2 Regina but tame Mustangs-blank Maquoketa, 4-0
SOLON– What better way to rebound from a weekend loss to No. 2 Iowa City Regina than with a win?
Solon’s varsity soccer team moved to 8-6 on the season with a breezy 4-0 victory over Maquoketa Monday, May 6.
The Spartans fell to second-ranked 1A Regina Saturday morning, 3-0, but it was the first loss for the boys since a defeat at the hands of No. 1-ranked Dyersville Beckman. Solon has won five of its last six, including a 1-0 win over Mount Vernon at Spartan Stadium Friday.
“I felt the Mount Vernon game was our best one of the year. We controlled the entire match and possessed the ball extremely well,” said head coach Jeremy McMurrin. “The 1-0 score didn’t show the way we really controlled the match.”
Adam Nelson-Ockenfels scored the goal halfway through the second period with an assist from Jaden Durr.
Goalie Nick Melchert had five saves in the shut-out, according to online statistics.
Melchert was busy during the Regina game the next day. The Regals took nine shots on goal, with Melchert collecting six saves.
“The Regina game, we did play well.,” McMurrin said. “We made about five mistakes the entire match and when you play team of that caliber, they tend to make you pay for your mistakes. Overall, it was a frustrating day for us, but we learned from our mistakes.”
The Spartans travel to DeWitt Thursday and return home to host Williamsburg Tuesday, May 13.
“We are a young and inexperienced team this year and we continue to improve each day the season goes forward,” McMurrin concluded.
