MAQUOKETA– The time to put away the equipment has come.
The 2012 football season is over for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers. Coach Rodney Walls and company took a 4-4 record on the road Friday night to Maquoketa for week nine action and a chance at making the playoffs. However, the Cardinals, recovering from a loss to Solon the week before, held CCA to one touchdown and took the night, 14-7.
Maquoketa scored first in the second quarter on a 15-yard run and a good extra point kick for a 7-0 lead. Jonathan Nzombo scored with 2:42 left in the third quarter on a 6-yard run while Niels VanElsas’ kick tied the ballgame. The Cardinals retaliated with a 20-yard touchdown pass with 28 seconds remaining in the period. Cory Wirth nailed his second PAT kick of the night for the lead and the win.
The Clippers were out-numbered offensively across the board, earning eight first downs to 16 for the Cardinals and making 22 rushing attempts to the red birds’ 50.
