Cardinals close out Clippers’ season

MAQUOKETA– The time to put away the equipment has come.
The 2012 football season is over for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers. Coach Rodney Walls and company took a 4-4 record on the road Friday night to Maquoketa for week nine action and a chance at making the playoffs. However, the Cardinals, recovering from a loss to Solon the week before, held CCA to one touchdown and took the night, 14-7.
Maquoketa scored first in the second quarter on a 15-yard run and a good extra point kick for a 7-0 lead. Jonathan Nzombo scored with 2:42 left in the third quarter on a 6-yard run while Niels VanElsas’ kick tied the ballgame. The Cardinals retaliated with a 20-yard touchdown pass with 28 seconds remaining in the period. Cory Wirth nailed his second PAT kick of the night for the lead and the win.
The Clippers were out-numbered offensively across the board, earning eight first downs to 16 for the Cardinals and making 22 rushing attempts to the red birds’ 50. Whereas the Cardinals gained 180 yards rushing, the Clippers had 24. But CCA passed for 162 yards to the birds’ 117 and intercepted three Cardinals passes.
Nzombo led in rushing with six carries for a net of 6 yards, Josh Martinac had one carry for 2 yards, Tanner Bandy carried once for 2 yards. Quarterback Konrad Moore completed 15 of 33 passes with one interception, the longest pass going in the books at 27 yards. Zach Anderson took seven of those passes for 71 yards while Bandy caught three for 42. Andrew Beckler received two for 18, AJ Liddell took two for 17 yards and Nzombo caught one for 14 yards gained.
Danny Espinoza had one punt for 39 yards and Martinac punted 10 times for 357, the longest going 48 yards.
Defensively, Jake Swenka had 16 tackles in total, Miguel Mosaquites made 14 and Stephen Jensen was involved in 10. Aaron Campbell and Kam Kahler had six total each; Bandy had three unassisted and two assisted tackles for five. Nzombo, Martinac, Aaron Akers and Tony Pederson had four tackles apiece. Beau Gerard, Tyler Kasper, Terran Wagner, Bryan Marmolejo, Jared Ganschow, Mitch Stopko and Sage Spiker also got their hands on the redbirds.
The Clippers end the season with a 4-5 record overall as the process of rebuilding and re-fitting for next year begins. The team will bid fair winds and following seas to seniors Moore, Liddell, Martinac, Campbell, Kahler, Anderson, Mosaquites, Ganschow, VanElsas, Swenka, Nick Strasser, Tanner Martinson, Zach Smith and Gerard.
