CCA’s “dangerous” offense hopes to return to state soccer tournament

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) boys’ soccer team made its first state tournament appearance last year and hopes to repeat this season, albeit with better results. Eventual champion Cedar Rapids Xavier knocked out the Clippers 2-0 in the quarterfinal round in Des Moines.
The Clippers had an 11-5 record overall, 6-4 in the WaMaC.
Second-year (as head coach, fifth year overall) Coach Tim Benson, along with new assistants Will Stockman and Nick Quinlan, hopes to build on 2011 successes such as winning the sub-state final at home, and making it to state. Benson also hopes for a much better showing against friendly rivals Solon. Last year, the Spartans pounded the Clippers in a game broadcast on live TV.
Four seniors return: Ryan Hall, Caleb Sedlacek, Gavin Lukes and Austin Mussig. Hall is a striker with 19 goals and five assists to his credit last year. Sedlacek plays midfield and posted three goals and a dozen assists. Lukes is also in the midfield and had one goal last year while Mussig is a striker with a pair of goals and one assist on the 2011 season. Sophomore Bryan Marmolejo is back as a tenacious defender. Marmolejo had one assist last year.
Senior Casey Rohret joins the lineup with juniors Mani Espinosa and Miguel Mosaquites. Espinosa will work midfield while Mosaquites will be a defender. Rohret’s role is listed as to be determined.
“Our numbers are great with a large freshman class and there is a lot of competition for several positions,” Benson said, with only five players returning with varsity experience. Looking at the WaMaC Benson sees Waterloo Columbus having strong returning players. “We should compete with everyone, but you never know until the season begins,” he said.
However, Benson also said, “we are returning some dangerous offensive players.”
