TIFFIN– Weigh the anchor and trim the sails, the Clippers are casting off for Des Moines and Cownie Soccer Park.
The boys take field 6 for a Class 2A quarterfinal match at the state soccer tournament against Perry today (Thursday, June 5) at 2:35 p.m. A win advances Clear Creek Amana (CCA) to a 2:35 p.m. semifinal tomorrow (Friday, June 6). From there it’s either to the consolation match Saturday (June 7) at 1:40 p.m. or the championship at 2:30 p.m.
The Clippers knocked off the Keokuk Chiefs 3-1 on Thursday, May 29, in a Class 2A substate semifinal match at Tiffin to set the stage for a Saturday, May 30, final against the Fairfield Trojans and a 2-0 win.
Against Keokuk, the Chiefs scored with 13:50 remaining in the first half, but Pierre Buffard retaliated a minute later to tie the match at 1-1. With 4:34 left in the half, Jacob Klingeman launched a header into the Chiefs’ net to make it 2-1. Klingeman took a pass from Anthony Pocasangre in the effort.
Buffard knocked the third and final goal in with 11 seconds to go in the second half.
Against the Trojans, Jon Jacobson put in both goals, the first at nearly five minutes into the first half, driving the ball in, and the second with 16 minutes left in the second, again walking the ball right past the keeper.
For the CCA seniors, this will be the third state tournament appearance in the last four years. Coach Tim Benson spoke about his seniors: Andrew Beckler, Klingeman, David Calderon, Mark Lewis, Bryan Marmolejo, Mitchell Walker and Connor Mougin.
“They’re just great, they’re the pulse of the team, (Andrew) Beckler in the middle, (David) Calderon, (Bryan) Marmolejo, you know, Bryan’s a good talker, Andrew does it more with actions (and) David just plays with a cool head. And then you’ve got (Connor) Mougin on the outside; all he does is shut guys down. He doesn’t ask for any headlines, he’s not a fulltime soccer player, he’s a good football player, he’s an impenetrable wall. And then (Jacob) Klingeman, he’s a new guy to our program this year and that was a beautiful goal (the header against Keokuk).”
Benson’s boys take a 12-4 record to Des Moines as the No. 7 Seed while Perry is No. 2 with a 14-3 record.
