Change your smoke alarm batteries Oct. 29

SOLON– The Solon Fire Department urges families in Solon to install and maintain working smoke alarms. Properly installed and maintained smoke alarms save lives every day across the country.
And, Solon Fire Department members are ready to help.
From 9-11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29, the Solon Fire Department will conduct a free “Battery Up” campaign offering in-home fire prevention to residents in need of assistance.
Firefighters will visit residents, in their homes, to change smoke detector batteries and identify fire safety hazards. Those wishing to participate in the in-home visit must make an appointment.

The largest percentage of home fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or alarms that don’t work. Smoke alarms provide a few minutes of advance warning in the event of a home fire, and the extra time can save lives.
The Solon Fire Department recommends the following:
- Check smoke alarms monthly by pushing the test button.
- Change the batteries in your alarm at least once a year. Immediately install a new battery if an alarm chirps, a warning the battery is low.
- Teach children what the smoke alarm sounds like and what to do when they hear it.
- Keep smoke alarms clean by vacuuming over and around it regularly. Dust and debris can interfere with its operation.
- Do not paint over your smoke alarm as it could impair its function.
- Never disable a smoke alarm. If your smoke alarm is sounding “nuisance alarms,” try locating it further from kitchens or bathrooms.
In addition, the department recommends families create and practice a home fire escape plan. Fire escape plans should include at least two escape routes for every room in the home. Families should choose a convenient meeting place, outside of the home and practice the escape plan at least twice a year with all family members.
