Charles “Charlie” Lee Steinbeck, 80, died peacefully Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at the Solon Care Center.
A Memorial Service celebrating Charles’ life was held Jan. 30 at Grace Lutheran Church in DeWitt, with the Rev. Rafferty officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Calamus.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Grace Lutheran Camp c/o Grace Lutheran Church or to Iowa City Hospice.
Charles was born March 26, 1932, in Calamus, the son of Herbert and Margaret Roseland Steinbeck. He attended school in Calamus. On Dec. 7, 1949, Charles married Janis Davisson in Davenport.
Charles farmed for many years and worked construction as a concrete finisher in Davenport. He owned and operated Steinbeck Painting in DeWitt. In 1998 Charles moved to Iowa City to be near his daughter.
He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in DeWitt, where he had served as a deacon and youth group leader, and the Western Illinois Cement Masons.
Survivors include his daughter, Judy Steinbeck Barkalow (Dr. Donald Brown) of Coralville; his son, David Steinbeck of Durant; three grandchildren, Matthew Barkalow of Sarasota, Fla. and Jaime Steinbeck of Eldridge and Jessi Jones of Davenport; his sister, Mae Jean Leinbaugh of DeWitt; and former daughter-in-law Vickie Talbot of Eldridge.
Charles was preceded in death by his loving wife Janis in 2001, his parents and sister, Faye Ann Dykemia.
