TIFFIN– Vikings have been celebrated in popular lore as a band of ruffians pillaging and plundering all in their path. Tuesday, Dec. 13, the Vikings of Vinton-Shellsburg lived up to that moniker as they rolled over the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers, 73-38, in a WaMaC conference varsity match up in Tiffin.
The Creek boys were down, 6-0, when Camden Armstrong finally got the Clippers on the scoreboard with a two-point basket. The Clippers fought to within three points, trailing 15-12, but a 3-point basket at the buzzer by the Vikings’ Cole Smith put them down, 18-12, at the end of the first period. Smith went on to lead all scorers with 31 points and five 3-point baskets. Smith sank four three-bombs in the second quarter, helping Vinton-Shellsburg to a 38-23 lead at halftime.
Nolan Schwarting had the Clippers’ only 3-point basket late in the second period.
The Vikings held the Clippers to four points in the third and went on a 20-point rampage in the fourth to seal CCA’s fate.
Jordan Smith was flattened late in the game by Vinton’s Drew Wiley, who ran full-speed into Smith from behind. Smith was assisted from the floor with minor injuries while Tyler Schrepfer stepped to the line to shoot technical foul free throws.
The loss dropped CCA to 1-5, while Vinton-Shellsburg broke even at 3-3.
Tate Thomsen led the Clippers with 13 points and six rebounds, while Schwarting had a six-point night and Armstrong supplied five points. The Clippers return to action Tuesday, Jan. 3, at Maquoketa with a 7:30 p.m. start time. The road campaign continues on Friday, Jan. 6, at Williamsburg and ends Tuesday, Jan. 10, at Independence. The Clippers are back in the Creek on Friday, Jan. 13, as Marion visits with a 7:30 p.m. varsity start.
