Clippers cruise to a homecoming win

TIFFIN — It wasn’t exactly smooth sailing for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers, but at the end of the night, they were celebrating a 31-7 Homecoming victory over the Demons from Washington in the seventh week of the season.
The Demons showed early they would be a force to be reckoned with, halting the first Clipper drive after nine plays and 37 yards. The Clippers quickly shut down the Washington offense, however, only allowing 8 yards on four plays and taking over possession on the Washington 32-yard line.
The first play of the drive led to cheers from the home side of the stands as quarterback and Homecoming King Blaze Smith lobbed a 32-yard pass to Ted Hergert in the end zone for a touchdown. Caleb Sedlacek’s extra point kick was good, and the Clippers posted a 7-0 lead with 7:07 remaining in the first quarter.
The score would remain unchanged until the second quarter, when the Demons bogged down the Clippers offensive drive at the 10-yard line. Following a pair of incomplete passes, CCA was looking at fourth down and 8 yards to go. Sedlacek was called upon for a field goal attempt. His 27-yard kick was good, with CCA settling for three more points and a 10-0 lead with 8:20 left in the half.
Washington’s next drive would take them all the way to the CCA 5-yard line before surrendering the ball on downs. With 4:06 left in the half, Smith was sacked and driven back to the Clippers’ 2-yard line. Smith connected with Josh Rohret for 5 yards, getting the ball out to the 7-yard line. On third down, 8 yards to go, Smith passed to Ted Hergert for 93 yards and a surprise touchdown. Sedlacek’s extra point was, as usual, spot-on, and the home team enjoyed a 17-0 lead with 2:56 on the clock.
CCA held the Demons at bay, allowing them only 29 yards on six plays before taking the ball back with 1:34 in the half. An incomplete pass from Smith to Rohret was coupled with a holding penalty against the Clippers. After gaining little in the way of yardage, a punt was faked with Smith keeping the ball and attempting to rush. Unfortunately for the Clippers, he took a yard of loss on the play and Washington regained the ball with 00:02. An incomplete pass closed out the half.
The second half opened with Sedlacek kicking off to the Demons. Washington quarterback Jake Redlinger was sacked twice during the drive, but still managed to get the ball moved to the Clippers’ 26-yard line.
The Clippers worked their way downfield covering 74 yards in eight plays capped by Tyler Grauer’s 13-yard rush for a touchdown. Sedlacek again nailed the point-after kick, and the Clippers were up 24-0 with 5:06 remaining in the period.
Demonic possession overtook the Clippers as Washington got a first down with a 24-yard pass, rushed for 8 yards more, then earned another first down with a 20-yard pass. Redlinger kept the ball, carrying it to the Clippers’ 5-yard line. Two plays later, the Demons were on the board.
With 2:36 left in the third Zack Manders returned the Washington kick 5 yards to the 25-yard line. A lateral to Rohret took him 75 yards for a touchdown. Sedlacek’s kick made it a 31-7 ballgame.
The momentum shifted to the defense with Redlinger being sacked, and throwing two incomplete passes, forcing a punt on fourth down with 1:04 left in the quarter. The Clippers closed out the period with Rohret attempting a rush, but losing 2 yards, and Hergert moving it in the right direction for 9 yards as time ran out.
The final quarter opened with the Clippers looking at third down and 3 yards to go. Smith connected with Hergert for 4 yards. The drive continued, with CCA threatening to score again, but Smith’s would-be touchdown pass was intercepted in the endzone by the Demon’s Landon Coker.
With 6:38 left in the game, Kevin Delzell assumed quarterback duties with mixed results. Delzell connected with Rohret and Drew Disterhoft for 5 and 10 yards respectively. A pass to Hergert was incomplete, but on the next play, he connected with Shawn Liddell for 33 yards.
The Demons then punished Delzell, sacking him twice in a row for 16 yards lost. An incomplete pass to Disterhoft stopped the drive and Sedlacek punted the ball back to Washington with 3:21 remaining.
The Clipper defense retaliated in-kind, sacking Redlinger twice in a row before the Demons punted the ball back to CCA for the final time.
The Clippers moved to 5-2 on the season. Elsewhere in District 5, Fairfield knocked off Oskaloosa 55-27, Fort Madison squeezed out a 30-27 win over Keokuk; and Williamsburg bombed Mt. Pleasant 45-21.
