TIFFIN– One kick is all it takes.
The 2013 varsity soccer season for Clear Creek Amana (CCA) ended Friday, May 31, in a 2-1 (4-3 PKs) loss to the Mount Vernon Mustangs on the home turf in a Class 1A regional semifinal match.
The postseason started on a high note with a 10-0 pounding of the West Liberty Comets in a quarterfinal match on Tuesday, May 28. CCA had previously clobbered the Comets 7-0 in an April 22 regular season meeting. With rain and thunderstorms threatening, the Clippers wasted no time in their dealings with the Comets, scoring in the first minute and running up a 3-0 lead in the first ten minutes. West Liberty’s keeper remained under withering fire, as the Clippers scored seemingly at will, building a 9-0 lead at the half. Emma Borman nailed the match-ending goal just three minutes into the second half.
“We were hoping to get girls playing time,” coach Matt Harding said, and did. Harding said his whole bench picked up time on the turf and even experimented with trying different positions. The coach added he was especially pleased with his starters noting their unselfish nature in attacking. The Clippers’ constantly shifting offense spread out the Comet defense and gave CCA more and cleaner looks at the goal.
Kelsey Hall and Bailey Mooney both earned hat tricks with three goals each while Borman and Megan Hall scored two goals apiece. Borman, and both Hall’s were credited with assists as well.
At the time, the Clippers’ semifinal opponent wasn’t yet known. Harding noted Mount Vernon was an unknown, but added, “if we can play like we did tonight, we will pose a challenge for anybody.” The Mustangs got past the Williamsburg Raiders 1-0 to earn the right to face CCA.
The Mustangs reared up and scored first, but the Clippers regrouped and retaliated with a Kelsey Hall goal a few minutes later to knot the match 1-1. The stalemate continued through the end of regulation play and both overtime periods resulting in the fate-determining penalty kick shootout. Mount Vernon’s crew put in four to CCA’s three to close the book on the Clipper season. CCA, in Harding’s first season, finished with a 13-5 record while the Mustangs galloped on to a Monday, June 3, regional final with Davenport Assumption, at Assumption.
