Clippers to run at state XC meet

Creek Boys and Kaylie Barker will represent CCA in Fort Dodge

North Liberty Leader
SOLON– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School’s boys varsity cross country team finished third in team points Thursday, Oct. 20, in a Class 3A state qualifying cross country meet at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area. Mount Vernon-Lisbon won the meet with 29 team points, followed by Marion (60) and the Creek Boys from CCA (90). The finish qualified the team to advance to the state meet in Fort Dodge Oct. 29.
Wyatt Sedlacek (13th), Cole Liebe (14th) and Nick O’Connor (15th) qualified individually as well. Kaylie Barker will represent the Creek Girls in Fort Dodge with her 15th-place finish. The Clipper girls were 10th in team points.
Boys coach Ben Robison was understandably excited by his team’s performance.
“Great work by the CCA cross country teams. It’s exciting to see the hard work pay off for everyone,” Robison said, adding he was asked before the season started in August about how far he thought the team could go. “I didn’t anticipate having the team at the state championships. That picture started to become clear at the end of September, and 100 percent of the credit goes to those guys. They have worked harder and smarter than any group I’ve coached. They decided to completely buy into the system and commit to the program. They are completely and totally focused on what they do day in and day out. Our pack running has been incredible all season, and it paid off in a big way on Thursday.”
The coach was also excited about having a freshman (O’Connor) and sophomore (Liebe) qualify as individuals. “It’s huge for the program, and it’ll be great to have young guys there to experience the championships.” But, he quickly added, “we aren’t going to Fort Dodge just to go... we are planning to make it the best race of the season!”
The 2016 State Cross Country Meet is set for Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge. The competition starts at 11 a.m. with Class 4A girls. Noon is the start of the 3A girls’ race with the 3A boys taking the gun at 12:30 p.m.
