NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s varsity girls suffered their seventh consecutive loss falling, 65-45, to Cedar Rapids Kennedy on Tuesday, Jan. 30, at home. The loss dropped the Lightning to 5-12, while the Cougars improved to 10-7.
The Cougars dominated the first period, taking an 18-5 lead at the end of the quarter and held a 31-19 advantage at halftime, despite a rally by the Lightning in the second period. The Cougars continued to claw the Bolts in the second half with 27 points in the third period and a 58-41 lead heading into the final quarter. Liberty put up a mighty effort in the third with 22 points, but a four-point showing in the fourth period meant they could not close the gap.
Cora Saunders led Liberty with 15 points, including four vital 3-point baskets. Sam McPherson contributed 11 points, Isabel Smith produced six, Jenna Saunders had a five-point night as did Brylee Klosterman, while Megan Davis added three. Smith, McPherson and Klosterman had five rebounds apiece for Liberty.
The Lightning travel to Central Clinton High School, in DeWitt, on Friday, Feb. 9, and to Washington on Monday, Feb. 12, to close out the regular season.
Liberty competes in the postseason for a shot at the 2018 Class 4A state tournament. The road to Des Moines starts Wednesday, Feb. 14, at Dubuque Wahlert, in Dubuque. The winner advances to a Region 4 semifinal Saturday, Feb. 17, at Clear Creek Amana High School. The regional final is set for Tuesday, Feb. 20, at the highest-ranked remaining team’s gym. Waterloo East, Independence and Marion make up the upper half of the Region 4 bracket. All postseason games start at 7 p.m.
