Creek Girls come up short in OT

Central DeWitt defeats CCA, 5-4

TIFFIN– They put up a tough fight for over 90 minutes, but ultimately, the No.12 team in Class 2A Sabers of Central Clinton in DeWitt prevailed, 5-4, over the varsity girls of Clear Creek Amana (CCA) in only the second match of the season on Tuesday, April 10, in Tiffin.
Carsyn Gallagher scored with an assist from Amelia Pereira in the second-minute to give the Creek Girls a quick 1-0 lead. DeWitt tied shortly after, leading to a stalemate throughout almost the rest of the first half. Alexis Schau put the Clippers ahead, 2-1, late in the period, scoring with an assist from Ellen Austin.
The Sabers took a 3-2 lead in the second half, but Gallagher picked up a hat trick with two goals in eight minutes for a 4-3 lead with just two minutes remaining in the match.
“Unfortunately, DeWitt got a late breakaway and tied it up to send it to overtime (OT),” Coach Matt Harding said. “We were on the front door for the first OT, but DeWitt earned a corner kick quickly in the second OT, and managed to put away the game winner.”
Harding commended junior Lillian Hennes, the Creek Girls’ keeper, for keeping them in the game. Hennes made six saves through 92 minutes of play.
Overall, Harding said, he’d seen a huge improvement in performance all around from the week before.
The loss dropped the Clippers to 0-2 in the weather-beaten season, with two matches already canceled, including a Monday, April 9, match in Wellman, due to snow.
The Creek Girls are home Thursday, April 19, as the Center Point-Urbana Stormin’ Pointers visit for a 5:30 p.m. match ahead of a Friday, April 20, trip to Island Park, in Adel, for Adel-DeSoto-Minburn’s (ADM) two-day tournament. CCA returns home on Tuesday, April 24, to face the Marion Indians at 5:30 p.m.
