SMOUNT VERNON– It was the best game of the year defensively, said head coach Brad Randall.
The Solon varsity boys dismantled the Mount Vernon Mustangs, 52-31, last Tuesday (Jan. 30), their only game of the week.
But the Spartans have a full slate this week, including senior night hosting Dyersville Beckman Feb. 6 and road trips to West Branch and Williamsburg Thursday and Friday.
In Mount Vernon, Solon held the Mustangs to 13 first-half points and led 44-23 at the end of three quarters.
The Spartans were again led in scoring by their front court. Joe Weeks and Ryan Kunkel had 16 and 12 points respectively. Weeks had seven rebounds for the team lead, while Kunkel added four steals and three blocks. One of those blocks came after Kunkel had a dunk on the offensive end. On the ensuing Mustang possession, he blocked a shot into the stands.
As a team, Solon shot 23-47 from the field, but the two post players were a combined 13-20.
Emilio Villagrana had six assists to go with 6 points, while Ethan Ahern had three offensive rebounds. Austin D. Miller added 6 points, going 2-3 from the field and 2-2 at the line.
The Spartans finish the regular season with a road trip to undefeated Western Dubuque Tuesday, Feb. 12, and begin postseason play in Class 3A Substate 5 District 10 at home Monday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. against Washington.
