Doug Olney, 48, died peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at VAMC of complications related to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
Funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 9 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, with Father Walter Helms officiating. Burial with military honors was at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Cosgrove.
In lieu of flowers, an educational memorial fund has been established at Hills Bank and Trust Company for Doug and Cindy’s son, Tyler.
Doug was born Dec. 5, 1964, in Iowa City, the son of Howard and Gloria Rohrer Olney. He was a graduate of Iowa City High School and the University of Iowa. On April 26, 1997, he married Cindy Volk at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City.
Doug served in the Iowa Army National Guard for over 30 years, including time served in Iraq. His last rank was lieutenant colonel.
Since 1992, Doug was employed at Hawkeye Food Service.
He was a member of St. Thomas More Church and the North Liberty American Legion.
Local survivors include his father and step-mother, Howard (Marlene) Olney of North Liberty; and in-laws Jim and Janet Volk of Tiffin.
