Eileen Kathryn Rogers, 74, formerly of Mount Vernon, and a resident of the Great River Care Center, McGregor, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, after a long and courageous battle with Lewy Body disease. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Jan. 18 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Mount Vernon, by the Rev. Monsignor Thomas Zinkula. Visitation with Rosary, followed by a Celebration of Life, was held Jan. 17, at Morgan Funeral Choices, Mount Vernon.
Eileen was born April 10, 1939, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. She grew up on the family farm outside of Solon and as a young girl, attended country school in rural Cedar Bluff. In high school Eileen was a terrific athlete, especially when it came to basketball. She also loved playing drums in the band. She graduated from West Branch High School in 1957. After high school, she attended Hamilton Business College and upon graduation went on to work for Interstate Finance, Cedar Rapids. In November 1961, she married Richard Rogers and they made their home in Mount Vernon. Shortly after moving to Mount Vernon, they purchased Rogers Standard Service, where she worked until 1984. She went on to work at NCS (Pearson) in Iowa City until her retirement in 2002.
Eileen was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
Eileen is survived by her sons, Kevin (Matthew Brunscheen) Rogers of West Branch, Jeff (Barb) Rogers of Linn Creek, Mo., and Doug (Lisa) Rogers of Prairie du Chien, Wis.; her siblings Mary Jensen of West Branch and B.J. Leonard of Solon; her grandchildren; great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Lavona (Cerney) Leonard; and a sister, Rita Serbousek.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Memorial gifts will be shared with the National Parkinson’s Foundation, the Lewy Body Foundation and the Mount Vernon School District Foundation.
Lucille Elizabeth Shurr, 103, of Iowa City, died Jan. 13, 2014, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence.
She is survived by her twin sons, Donald (Marilyn) Shurr of North Liberty and David (Barbara) Shurr of Phoenix, Ariz.; grandchildren, Carrie (Jay) Coble of Crawfordsville, Molly (Jeffrey) Palmer of Swisher and Kristin Shurr of Fairfax, Va.
