Ely bank robber captured by authorities
ELY– The suspect in the Friday morning robbery of the Solon State Bank in Ely has been taken into custody, according to the Linn County Sheriff’s Department.
Robert David Dennis Melton, 50, of Cedar Rapids, has been charged with robbery in the second degree and remains in the Linn County Jail pending his court appearance, according to Linn County Sheriff Brian Gardner.
Linn County deputies and a Linn County Conservation officer located the suspect and his vehicle at the intersection of Ivanhoe Road and Jappa Road, where the suspect was taken into custody.
According to Assistant Patrol Commander Lt. Greg McGivern, the Linn County Sheriff’s Office received a report at 9:13 a.m. Friday, Jan. 17, of a bank robbery at the Solon State Bank in Ely in which a male subject fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.
According to witnesses, a weapon was not displayed at the bank. A description of the suspect’s vehicle was given to the Linn County Sheriff’s Department and the Melton was located, McGivern said in a press release.
The incident remains under investigation by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI.
