End W2 blues with H&R Block tax prep team
SOLON– Kathy and Jim Bruxvoort opened their newest H&R Block office in Solon in January when they felt embraced by the residents from day one.
“Everyone has been extremely helpful and welcoming,” Kathy said. “We’re honored to be a part of the Solon community.”
The office, located at 101 Windflower Lane, has four tax professionals to service Solon residents.
“Every person who walks through that door is different,” said Terry Christiansen, office manager and tax professional. Christiansen said the diversity of the client base is the best part of his job. He has been managing the new Solon office since it opened.
The Bruxvoorts own 10 H&R Block franchise offices in central Iowa, and are proud to have expanded their business to Solon.
“Solon is a special place and the people here know they can depend on H&R Block to handle their tax preparation needs,” Kathy said. “Our clients range from farmers, to small business owners to recent college graduates filing taxes for the first time, to a wide variety of families.”
Currently, the Solon office plans to stay open through April, although the Bruxvoorts may expand their hours depending on the needs of their clients throughout the year. The H&R Block tax professionals are able to see Solon client by appointment from May to December.
Every H&R Block tax preparer must complete a minimum of 84 hours of classes with the Kansas City-based company. Christiansen, a former educator, praised the training he received in the Block system and described the company’s team of preparers as well-versed in tax law, yet able to simplify it for clients.
Christiansen is joined at the Solon office by fellow H&R Block tax preparers Patrick Smith, Carol Barr and Shannon Cooley.
Combined, these tax professionals have more than 44 years of experience preparing taxes. Also, most are enrolled agents, which means they can represent clients during any interaction with the IRS. To become certified, they passed a three-part comprehensive IRS test covering individual, estate, partnerships and corporate tax returns along with other tax related nuances.
Smith, a resident of Solon, is especially eager to help his fellow neighbors with tax returns and answer any questions.
“I enjoy helping people with what can be a stressful experience for many,” Smith said. “It is very important that taxpayers never pay more in taxes for which they are legally obligated.”
Kathy Bruxvoort said the most frequent questions come from clients who are experiencing a diversification in income. This often includes those now receiving 1099s for freelance work instead of W-2 forms, which are often complicated regarding tax withholding amounts.
With the IRS predicting that nearly five million taxpayers will file a Form 1040EZ this tax season, H&R Block has an offer for clients to file their federal form for free now through Feb. 29. Generally, a 1040EZ filer is a single or married filing jointly taxpayer who does not pay mortgage interest, has no dependents and earned less than $100,000 last year.
Because April 15 is a Sunday and Washington, D.C., will observe Emancipation Day on April 16, the deadline to file federal tax returns is April 17.
