Eugene “Gene” Henry Brugman, 91, passed away on June 10, 2011, while on vacation with his family in Minnesota.
Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice or to the Mercy Hospital Foundation (Iowa City). Funeral mass was held June 15 at St. Mary’s Church in Nichols with Rev. Walter Helms officiating. Gene was born Nov. 13, 1919, the son of Henry and Mary (Cross) Brugman. He was a 1937 graduate of West Liberty High School. After high school he attended the Fredric Mizen Commercial Art School in Chicago for four years.
Following art school, Gene decided to spend his life as a farmer on the family farm that his grandfather purchased in 1885.
Gene celebrated 61 years of marriage to Dorothy Kessler. They were married on Aug. 29, 1949, at St. Mary’s Church in Iowa City. They lived on the family farm until they retired and moved to Iowa City in 1992. The last three years Gene and Dorothy made their home at Windmill Pointe Estates in Coralville.
Gene is survived locally by his wife Dorothy Brugman of Coralville; and son Robert Brugman of North Liberty.
