Evelyn H. Brecht, 98, of Marengo and Norway, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at her home. Funeral services were Feb. 22 at the Norway United Methodist Church, Norway, with Pastor Rose Marie Calderon Khan officiating. Burial was in St. Patrick and St. Paul Cemetery, Watkins. A memorial fund has been established.
She is survived by four children, Carol Hooper of Grants Pass, Ore., Donna (Jon) Divishek of Solon, Jim (Linda) Brecht of Marengo, and Dennis Brecht of Marengo; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Also surviving are her siblings, Herb Snell, Jack Snell and MaryLou Selzer, three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Snell and Shirley Snell, and Lorraine Snell, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Melvin “Red” Brecht.
Evelyn Hattie Snell Svoboda Brecht was born in rural Fairfax on Sept. 25, 1915, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Vanous) Snell. She was one of 13 children that grew up on the farm. She graduated from Walford Consolidated School in 1935. Her first wedding was April 8, 1942, when she married Frances “Frank” Svoboda. He was killed in action during World War II. Evelyn moved to Cedar Rapids and began working at Colonial Baking Company until she married Melvin “Red” Brecht. They were married April 26, 1945, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Watkins. They were blessed with five children. Evelyn and Melvin farmed the family century farm until Melvin’s death on Aug. 22, 1974, at which time their two sons, Jim and Dennis took over the farming operations.
Evelyn was a member of the Norway Methodist Church.
