Five Solon varsity football players recognized by IPSWA

Shive named to First Team defense

DES MOINES– The Iowa Print Sports Writers Association (IPSWA) announced its selections for postseason Class 2A football honors on Tuesday, Nov. 24. Among those honored were five members of Solon’s 2020 varsity football team.
Solon senior Carson Shive was named the IPSWA Class 2A First Team defense for his success as an inside linebacker. He recorded 78 tackles, a team high, including 58 solo, 12 for loss and four sacks. He also recovered four fumbles.
Senior Jackson Ryan was a IPSWA Class 2A Second Team pick as a running back, recognized for 1,017 yards with 12 touchdowns, averaging 6.6 yards per carry, leading the team.
Senior Colton Hoffman was also selected to the Class 2A Second Team as a wide receiver for catching 29 passes, amassing 678 yards and scoring 11 touchdowns.
Senior Ben Cusick was selected for Class 2A Second Team defensive honors based upon his 35 tackles including 29 solo tackles, 11 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks.
Junior Gage Marty was recognized as a Class 2A Third Team offensive lineman providing blocking for the Spartans’ rushing offense which averaged 235 yards and nearly three touchdowns per game.
The Spartans ended the 2020 season with a record of 7-3 after a quarterfinal elimination by the eventual Class 2A champion Waukon.
The IPSWA was formed in February 2018 to carry on the tradition of selecting all-state teams to honor Iowa’s best high school athletes in football, boys’ basketball, girls’ basketball and baseball.
