Francis John Sheely, 88, of Cedar Rapids, died early Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center.
Funeral Mass was celebrated on Jan. 11 at Saint Ludmila Catholic Church by Father Dennis Juhl. Burial was at Saint John’s Cemetery.
Francis is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mavis; children, Marcia and Edward Engel, Ely; Cheryl and Ronald Croy, Phoenix, Ore.; Patricia Sheely-Adolphson and Curt Adolphson, San Antonio, Texas; Michelle Sheely, Cedar Rapids; Kristine and David Heeren, Bloomfield; Jacqueline and Dave Patterson, Ladora; Carleen and Jay Kirkland, Springfield, Ore.; Angela and Dave Kern, Johnston; Roberta and Paul Cisar, Bellevue, Neb.; Melinda and Tod Keiffer, Crestview, Fla. and son-in-law, Mark Johnson, Cedar Rapids; 24 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, two sisters, one brother and special friends/neighbors for over 50 years, Kris, Hank, Bev, Dave and Sandy.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Janet, infant son, John, granddaughter, grandson, parents and a sister.
Francis was born June 28, 1925, in Coggon to John and Agnes (Woods) Sheely. He was a 1943 graduate of Coggon High School. Francis was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in France, Italy and England. He married Mavis D. Sparrgrove in November 1949 at Saint John’s Catholic Church in Coggon. They lived in Cedar Rapids since 1958, moving from Marion. Francis was employed as an operating engineer for the International Operating Engineers Local 234 for over 50 years retiring in 2003.
He was a member of Saint Ludmila Catholic Church and the Disabled American Veterans.

Military honors were conducted by American Legion Post 727.
A memorial fund has been established.
