Free rain garden seminar June 4

CORALVILLE– Rain gardens are used as a way to manage storm water and improve water quality. Lucy Hershberger of Forever Green, Inc. believes that recent flooding in Iowa demonstrates the need to manage surface runoff and reduce flash flooding and pollution in Iowa’s rivers and streams. On June 4 at 10 a.m., Hershberger will lead a free rain garden seminar to help Iowans decrease rainwater runoff and divert chemicals and fertilizers out of waterways.
This class will offer participants an opportunity to see a rain garden, learn what a rain garden is, how it works, and how to determine the location, size and the best plants to use in their rain garden. The seminar will also discuss other practices such as rain barrels and improving soils and programs that may help pay for a portion of the cost.
Forever Green is an early adopter of rain gardening after they installed a rain garden that is one of the first in the area designed to collect water from the street and channel it into a rain garden reducing the pollutants that flow into waterways.
To sign up for the free seminar, call Lucy Hershberger at 626-6770 or email lucyh@forevergreengrows.com. Forever Green Garden Center is located at 125 Forevergreen Rd., just south of North Liberty.
