Frustration plagues Clipper girls

Fouls, free throws, turnovers help Beckman sink CCA

TIFFIN– Before Saturday night’s varsity match between the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers and the Dyersville Beckman Blazers, Clipper coach Matt Haas said he thought having the previous night off (the CCA-Western Dubuque game was postponed due to icy roads) would benefit his team.
After the 45-40 loss to the Blazers, a frustrated and upset Haas summed up the game.
“Free throws and turnovers. We worked on that, and worked on that over the break. I thought they’d learned their lesson.” The coach was stymied by what he called a lack of focus, and the fact that, “we gave them (Beckman) five points at the end.”
With two minutes left in the first period, Creek was ahead 8-2, with six of those points coming from Hanna Stokes. Stokes led the team with 16 points. The Blazers started to catch up thanks to free throws. Kiley Seelman got the Clipper fans on their feet with a 3-point shot at the buzzer, which went in, bounced up, and then fell through to give CCA a 15-9 lead. The second period showed it would be a close game as Beckman scored a field goal and a 3-pointer to trail 15-14. The game was soon tied at 16-all before Beckman scored another basket. A Lexi Kinnaird free throw and a Mallory Neubauer basket edged the Clippers ahead 19-18. The Clippers took a 22-20 lead at the half.
The Clippers built up a 35-27 lead in the third with a 3-pointer from Kinnaird and a field goal from Stokes. Emily Weiland went 2-2 at the charity stripe while Kelsey Hall and Seelman scored two-point baskets. In the final eight minutes, the Blazers set fire to the Clippers’ ship with two field goals and a three-pointer to make it 35-34 in favor of the Creek girls. Kelsey Hall hit a free throw to add a point, but the Blazers soon tied the game at 36. With just over a minute left to play, CCA was down 40-38 when Kelly Noska sank a badly needed basket to tie at 40. After that, however, it was all free throws for the Blazers. Haas noted his squad was out-scored 18-5 in the period.
The loss put the Clippers’ record at 3-7.
