Healthy Kids Community Care is a school based health clinic, open two days/week, at SEJH and West High School. The clinic provides free medical care to children in the Iowa City Community School District and surrounding districts, and their younger siblings who do not have health insurance, are underinsured, do not have a healthcare provider, or other circumstances that prevent them from getting the health care they need. The clinic started in 2007, when a group of community leaders and healthcare providers came together to determine how best to address the unmet health needs of our children.
Since the clinic opened in 2007, over 1,200 students have been served, in over 1,500 clinic visits. The clinic is a true community collaboration, with United Way providing ongoing support and funding, UIHC providing a pediatrician one day per week, the University of Iowa College of Nursing in a cooperative agreement for the services of a PNP. The University Dental College works with us to provide dental care to students referred from the clinic (Bright Smiles), Corridor Radiology provides free X-rays and radiologic interpretation. Alberhasky Eye Clinic provides free eye care and glasses to students referred from the clinic.
“The community of Iowa City should be so very proud of the way they have come together to provide primary healthcare to children whose families cannot afford insurance. The Healthy Kids Clinic is a true collaboration. What began as a dream in 2005 has become reality through the cooperative efforts of the Iowa City Community School District, Mercy Hospital, UIHC, United Way, numerous private medical practitioners, non-profit agencies, public health agencies and many generous donors. The Healthy Kids Clinic reflects the values of our community and is one way we strive to give every child a good start in life. Thanks to everyone who supports us. We can’t do it without you,” said Dr. Marguerite Oetting, a clinic physician.
