Obama came into office with a major goal of reasserting our reputation as a nation with a high moral code, a nation who trumpets the rule of law and religiously follows the Geneva Convention and the United Nations anti-torture treaty. He thought by closing Gitmo, and stating as strongly as he has our Anti-torture Policy he could put Bush and Cheney’s outrageous torture policies behind us and look forward.
Cheney’s non-stop preaching on the virtues of torturing our enemies is making it impossible to not look back and his actions are really demanding prosecution of himself, Bush, Gonzales and the authors of the notorious letters legalizing our use of torture.
No one in the world will now believe that we will not torture in the future should the republicans regain power unless we vigorously prosecute the perpetrators. We tried and hung Japanese soldiers after WWII for water boarding our soldiers.
Cheney’s proud he authorized it and would do it again in a heartbeat. He ignores reports of late that probably over half of Al-qaeda volunteers joined the fight in Iraq because of our abuse and torture of Muslims at Abu Grabe and the Gitmo Gulag, thus probably over half of U.S. deaths in Iraq were a direct result of our abusive treatment of detainees. Torture did not make us safer – it caused us great harm.
We need to turn Cheney over to the Haig tribunals and let the whole world try him and if found guilty, give his bare backsides a public flogging. Only then will the world believe that we’ve put torture behind us and we will not tolerate it again.
