Hawkeye wrestlers win third straight title
The Hawkeye wrestlers won their third straight Midlands title last week at Evanston, Illinois.
Iowa had three finalists; Matt McDonough (124), Brent Metcalf (149) and Jay Borschel (174).
It was good to see seniors Brent and Jay win championships, but for Matt, a redshirt freshman, the future looks good with his first title.
Nate Moore, another redshirt freshman wrestling at 133, finished sixth, losing to top-seeded Nick Fanthorpe from Iowa State, 2-1.
Sophomore Montell Marion also had a sixth-place finish and Derek St. John, a true freshman at 157, placed fifth wrestling unattached.
Ryan Morningstar (165) and Chad Beatty (197) also helped out the cause with third place finishes while Phil Keddy (184) came in fourth.
It will be interesting who will win the battle at 141 and 157.
Joe Slaton (who finished third wrestling unattached), Montell Marion and Dan LeClere are all in the mix at 141. Joe might have the inside track at this time.
Matt Ballweg started 24 times last year at 157 pounds. He will have Aaron Jansen and Jake Kerr to battle with, plus true freshman Derek St. John.
Oh, by the way, Brent took home the Dan Gable Most Outstanding Wrestler award by scoring bonus points in five of his six matches.
The next home meet is Saturday, Jan. 16, against Oklahoma State.
I expect a big crowd and a great meet.
