The Hawkeye wrestlers picked up a big 24-6 win over fifth-ranked Oklahoma State Friday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Iowa had eight wins, a couple of upsets and some exciting matches.
Tony Ramos (133) started the year ranked No. 1 but has lost two matches so far this season. He only had two losses all of last year.
Tony came into the meet ranked fourth and his opponent, Jon Morrison, was ranked first.
Tony has the energy and talent to excite the Hawkeye crowd, and boy did he deliver against the Cowboys.
The match was close going into the third period but Tony caught Jon, put him on his back and picked up a huge 8-2 win.
The Hawks had a big upset at 149 when 15th-ranked Brody Grothus took third-ranked Josh Kindig to his back, almost getting a pin, winning 9-5.
Top-ranked Derek St. John scored a reversal at 157 for a one-point win over second-ranked Alex Dieringer, and another upset came at 165.
Former West High Trojan Nick Moore, ranked fifth, scored a takedown in overtime and defeated second-ranked Tyler Caldwell, 3-1.
“A team win,” said head coach Tom Brands. “It was very close but what we have to do is hammer down the points that lead to points. Front headlocks, not taking time on the bottom, riding in good position where you can take control and continue to build on top by turning.”
Just like a coach to be not satisfied with a solid victory over a good team as Iowa hadn’t won that big over the Cowboys since 1995.
Even in Iowa’s losses at 141 and 174, the Hawks lost by three and one point.
Iowa followed that up with a 38-4 win over Indiana Sunday at Carver.
The Hawks won nine of 10 matches and scored bonus points in seven matches, including a pin by Tony Ramos at 133.
Iowa’s only loss came it 157 as Mike Kelly replaced Derek St. John who was sitting out.
“Are we getting to where we are supposed to be?” said assistant coach Terry Brands. “Are we hanging in positions? Are we building our leads? Those are good measuring sticks to how good a team is and how good a team is going to be tomorrow.”
The wrestlers are on a roll after a disappointing loss to Penn State.
Hopefully that loss will help drive them to keep improving and peak in March.
