Hochstetler tosses no-hitter

Lady Spartans cruise past competition
Miranda Hochstetler allowed only one walk on the way to throwing a no-hitter against Mid-Prairie Wednesday in Solon. Hochstetler pitched five innings in a 10-0 win for the Lady Spartans.

SOLON– Like the weather, the Lady Spartans are sizzling.
Solon’s varsity softball team ripped through its competition last week, allowing no more than two runs in any given game, including against three highly-ranked opponents.
The Lady Spartans made short work of conference rival Dyersville Beckman last Monday, shut down No. 3 (3A) Mid-Prairie Wednesday, then took an Ottumwa tournament by storm, defeating two ranked 5A teams in the process.
Solon moved to 37-2 on the year and remained ranked No. 3 in Class 4A.
If you like statistics, here’s a few to chew on. According to QuikStats Iowa, the Lady Spartans are batting a combined .438 average, with 491 hits and 127 doubles, all tops on the list for those teams which have submitted numbers to the QuikStats website.
In its last six games, Solon outscored its opponents 57-9.
Solon senior Miranda Hochstetler did her part in contributing to that total Wednesday when she threw a no-hit 10-0 shut-out against Mid-Prairie. It was senior night for Hochstetler and three other Lady Spartans– Kara Misel, Alyssa Rickels and Emma Rickels– playing in their final regular season home game.
Solon pounded out 15 hits in 24 at-bats, including a home run by sophomore Ali Herdliska and six doubles (two for junior Riley Ogden). The Lady Spartans scored at least two runs in four of the first five innings. Five Solon players had a multiple-hit game.
That theme continued in Ottumwa, where Solon had 21 hits against Cardinal of Eldon in a 9-1 victory. Five Lady Spartans had at least three hits, including another home run by Ogden and a 4-4 showing by Emma Rickels.
It was Emma Rickels’ turn to homer against No. 9 Cedar Rapids Jefferson in a much tighter 4-2 win. Taylor Nearad provided the other two RBI, while Emily Ira allowed two earned runs by Jefferson in the sixth inning.
The pedal went back to the metal against No. 8 Ankeny in a 14-2 win. Ira scattered four hits, and Ankeny’s two runs in the second inning were unearned.
Offensively, Solon had 18 hits in 30 at-bats, including a 4-4 game for Nearad, who had four RBI.
