ICCSD deals with flu

IOWA CITY– It's hard to decide what is more contagious statewide – budget cuts or the flu.
Susie Poulton, the district's health services director, was at the Oct. 13 meeting to discuss the district's wellness policy, but she was also asked to update the board on the spread of flu throughout the district, especially in light of the appearance of the H1N1 flu virus this year.
Poulton told the board that more than 25 percent of City High students had missed school on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of the previous week, with many of them reporting flu-like symptoms. During the same week, about 10 percent of elementary students at Grant Wood and Horace Mann as well as Tate High School reported absences under similar circumstances.
Poulton said the 10 percent absence rate is the threshold that the district is following before reporting absences to the state, which, along with local bodies like the Johnson County Public Health Department, is monitoring the spread of the flu. Early last week, 10 schools, mostly on the east side of the city, met the 10 percent criteria.
