IOWA CITY– The West High varsity boys basketball machine rolled over the Spartans of Pleasant Valley 71-44 in a Class 4A substate semifinal game Friday, Feb. 24, at home. The win advanced the Trojans (19-3) to a Tuesday, Feb. 28, substate final against Muscatine at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids. The winner of that contest advanced to the state tournament in Des Moines.
Connor McCaffery put up West High’s first eight points and gave the Trojans an 8-6 lead in the first period. McCaffery went on to lead West with 24 points, including a trio of 3-point baskets. The Spartans proved to be a challenging foe in the first period as they took a 13-11 lead, but a Devontae Lane 3-point shot gave West the lead back at 14-13 as the Trojans won the period. A second Lane three-bomb plus free throws from Hakeem Odunsi made it 19-13 in the second period while a five-point run by Patrick McCaffery made it 26-15. The Trojans took a 27-15 lead into the locker room at halftime.
A scoreboard malfunction in the third period gave the Spartans some glee as it proclaimed Pleasant Valley ahead 114-31 for nearly 10 minutes. When play resumed, the Trojans put up a 12-point run on their way to a 39-17 lead. West held a 44-23 advantage going into the final eight minutes. Seybian Sims put up a layup in the final period making it 68-41 ahead of the 71-44 final.
The win was the 75th consecutive home win for the Trojans and the final performance in the West High gym for seniors Lane, Nate Disterhoft, Ahmed Idris, Connor McCaffery, Homy Nasr, Hirsche Henstrom and Josh Van Roekel.
A win against Muscatine would take the Trojans to the state tournament for the sixth consecutive year after a fourth-place showing in 2011; winning in 2012, 2013 and 2014, finishing third in 2015 and losing to West Des Moines, Valley last year in the championship game.
