It was a great weekend to be a Hawkeye fan

It was a pretty good weekend for Hawkeye fans.

Wrestling

On Friday, the Iowa wrestlers had three wins and went 29-1 in individual matches including 24 pins. That’s the first time in program history Iowa scored 50-plus points in three consecutive duals.
“It all starts with Clark and Ramos and goes through the rest of the lineup,” said head coach Tom Brands.
Cory Clark is a 125-pound redshirt freshman and he is fun to watch.
Tony Ramos is the top-rated wrestler at 133 pounds. Both had three pins.
“I think the energy was good and I think the pace was good,” said coach Brands. “When those two things are good, it leads to a lot of bonus points and a lot of situations where you’re going to get falls.”

Men’s Basketball

Friday night, the men’s basketball team improved to 5-0 knocking off Penn, Fran McCaffery’s alma mater, 85-55.
The fun part of watching this team so far is to see who is stepping up.
The first couple of games Aaron White, Devyn Marble and Zach McCabe were the go-to guys.
Friday it was Jarrod Uthoff, who had a career-high 19 points coming off the bench. Jarrod played 21 minutes, scored 19 points, grabbed four rebounds, had two assists, one block and one rebound.
Jarrod hit a 3-pointer and was 6-6 from the free throw line. He is so smooth and can take it outside or inside.
So far this year, Iowa has three players scoring in double-figures with Devyn Marble leading the way averaging 14.6.
Aaron White is second (13.8) and Jarrod, coming off the bench, is averaging 11.8.
Aaron is the leading rebounder (38) and Devyn leads in assists (19).
Mike Gesell switched to point in the last couple of games and looks more comfortable there.

Women’s Basketball

The Hawkeye women finished the weekend with a 67-60 road win at UNI and improved to 5-1 for the season.
The Panthers only led only once and the Hawkeyes made some nice runs, but couldn’t put UNI away.
At the end, it was too much Samantha Logic. The 5-9 junior had 17 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, two steals and one blocked shot.
Ally Disterhoft has been providing a spark off the bench and she finished with 14.
The Hawkeyes, who have always been a good free throw shooting team, only made 24-38 free throws. With the game being called a little tighter, Iowa will have to get better at the line and I believe they will.
Ally came into the game shooting almost 70 percent from the free throw line and she made only 5-10. It was only her second road game, but overall I’ve been impressed with her poise so far and she is averaging 12.8 points per game.
Melissa Dixon continues to struggle from 3-point range going 1-5 last Sunday and shooting only 15 percent for the season.
Look for Melissa to find the range and the Hawkeyes will be better.
Overall, a great weekend for the Hawkeyes.
