Jack Zschiesche is home!

NORTH LIBERTY– Jack Zschiesche is home!
After 107 days in the hospital and a recovery facility, the 6-year-old from North Liberty returned home on July 3, exceeding the expectations of his physicians and therapists. Jack, nicknamed JZ by a neighbor, experienced an aneurism due to an arteriovenous malformation in his brain while on vacation with his family in Minneapolis in March. He underwent five surgeries and 15-and-a-half weeks of hospitalization and therapy before he could return home with his parents, Brad and Amy Zschiesche, and his three siblings, Drew, Cade and Lila.
During Jack’s ordeal, many family members, friends and community members chipped in to offer help to the family. This Sunday, there is another opportunity to support the Zschiesche family and Jack’s on-going recovery.
The “Jump for JZ” event will be held Sunday, July 15, from 3–8 p.m. at Penn Meadows Park in North Liberty (with a rain-out location of Grace Community Church on Dubuque Street). A $5 wristband will allow kids to enjoy a number of activities, including a bouncy house, face painting, bingo, plinko and kids’ golf. Food from Pizza Ranch, Papa John’s, Tubrosa Pizza, Casey’s and Hy-Vee, as well as drinks from Crystal Clear and McDonald’s, will be offered for a free will donation.
Adults can enjoy a raffle, silent and live auctions, and the opportunity to donate blood. A live deejay will spin music for the dance from 6–8 p.m. Auction items include a variety of themed gift baskets, miscellaneous and autographed Hawkeye items, Hawkeye football tickets, a hotel stay and tickets to a Minnesota Twins game, a Diamond Dreams baseball package, a stay at the Riverside Casino, a lake get-away package and tickets to see Carrie Underwood in Moline in November, among many other items.
Jack’s family members have been posting updates to CaringBridge, an online site that allows others to track Jack’s condition and his progress. To read more of Jack’s story, visit www.caringbridge.org/visit/jackzschiesche.
In the last post since Jack’s return home, Brad Zschiesche wrote these words about the support they have received.
“I have learned so very much from this journey, the most being the spirit of man,” said Brad. “I will spend the rest of my life paying it forward to my friends, my family and my maker, you have all done my family the biggest proper one could ever imagine.”
Join the community in welcoming Jack home Sunday, July 15, at Penn Meadows Park from 3–8 p.m. All proceeds will help the family with rehabilitation and tutoring costs.
